So for a while now I've been wondering how I can travel to some of the more distant tracks, maybe even competing but as I live in the North east it is definitely going to involve some sort of transport for my westfield. One idea I had, which I am struggling to get out of my head is to buy a beavertail and fit a storage box on to it.

Something like this.... ebay clicky

With a budget of around £5000 I could have myself a dedicated vehicle.

At the moment I have an BMW M5 daily drive which isn't really suitable for towing, so my only other options are either sell the M5 for something that can tow, or buy a cheap van & trailer and do a trailer test. With the beavertail, I would hope to see quite high value retention so in theory I could sell it back on in a year or two for not a lot less. Insurance is around £400 a year, then factoring in mot's, road tax and items to self service am I mad? In theory I could lease it out to regain some expenditure, or use it myself for a few local car transports?

What you reckon, mad idea?

With that budget, I reckon you'd travel in much more comfort with a nice tow car plus a race shuttle type trailer. Plus you get somewhere dry to sit (inside the shuttle). Investing in a trailer license won't be something you'll ever regret, either.

The Brian James, PRG and other covered trailers ( or open for that matter ) hold their blue well so I would go that route if you can

Looking at the angle of that bed, I wonder if you'd struggle getting a Westy on it without it grounding out? Also, there doesn't appear to be anywhere to stow away all the essential stuff you'll end up taking with you. Fuel, spare set of wheels, Jack, tools etc etc?

Yes, it was a silly idea, so looking for a cheap estate car instead.. something like this another eBay clicky .... its able to tow 1500kg. with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 1610kg. Meaning it is well under the 3500kgs I am allowed to tow with a standard UK B license. A better idea?? Plus I'll have a lovely estate to pop to the tip with / hoy the push bike in the back.

might be double your budget, but gives you somewhere to sleep too!

There're a few of these on there. Now just go get another beer...

Looks like a nifty idea. I think I see how they get the car in, with the tail lift and extensions. Not sure with the leverage it would pick up a westfield though. But with the amount of Luton vans for sale, it could be quite the project :d

I've seen a few Luton conversions that work well. When you get to the track take the car out and then sleep in the van, mind you can do that with a covered trailer. And has already been said a covered trailer will certainly hold it's value well, especially if you buy nearly new so it's lost the first hit.

When the wife boots me out I think I'll buy an old bus.   Make a garage at the rear.   Some solar panels on the roof and a Rayburn in the middle.   What more could a man want :)
