Selling/transferring a Reg No

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit confused as to the process for selling/transferring a reg.

The reg is still on the car, do i;

a.  put it on retention then sell? if so how do I move the reg over to the new owner/car

b. transfer directly from the car to the new owners car?

c. something else?

I've looked at the DVLA site and this has caused my confusion.

Can anybody direct me as to the correct thing to do?

Cheers

Its dead easy ........... it costs £80 to put a plate on retention and remove it from the car.   You will then receive a retention certificate which you can then sell onto a.n. other for reg ownership or simply assign it to another car ............ this can be your car or the person you are selling the plate to ........... when selling a plate always include the £80 rentention fee costs.

If you pop into your local post office they will be able to provide the correct forms to start the retention / sale process

Thanks Mark, so put on retention first, that was the bit that i wasn't sure was required.

Yep put plate reg on retention before you sell the car which will then revert back to its original number. That way you can have a new log book and all paperwork done before sale of car.

Sell the car and do whatever you wish with the plate.
