lewis Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Just came across this thread on PistonHeads reporting that people had found GPS tracking devices on their cars after visiting shows. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=1613598 Homemade trackers found on cars after Sundays Ford Fair Silverstone - have a wee look under your car on the way home from shows..... you just never know .... I believe the police are now being involved and a return trace may be taking place so hopefully the people will be caught. Pictures of the device that was found Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Hope you don't mind Lewis, just edited the topic title - I'd ignored it previously thinking it was just a question about how to make fit/fit one that you'd seen at a show This one's a worrying development and pretty cheap to do for the thieving scum that are up to no good. Hopefully we're perhaps a bit under the radar, but conversely, our cars are also really easy to hide something like this in... Quote
dombanks Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Saw this on farce book too. I guess it's an easy thing to do these days. My electric workshop guy came in with one he'd found on the road with 2 whacking great magnets on. It had been run over but still worked even the sim card was still active. We thought it was from some shipping company ... either that or mi6 were about to come through the windows. Not seen him for a week. Quote
Lawrie Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 .....our cars are also really easy to hide something like this in... Not if it uses magnets Presumably its just a phone using the app that tells you where your kids are Quote
tisme Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I guess it wouldn't take long for someone to work out they could use these trackers for more than just finding out where your cat goes at night !! Isn't technology wonderful From a quick google it looks like you can get everything to counter these in terms of jammers (illegal in uk ?) to gsm/gps detectors but most are not cheap. The PH forum has a mixture of dumb comments but some useful insight - I suspect in a Westie it'll be more a case of doing a quick check after any shows (would anyone be interested in a WF? yes, perhaps is the answer) - I'll certainly be giving mine a quick check in the morning **** Dave or committee *** maybe worth moving this thread to members only area before anything is said that could be useful to any of the scumbags out there Quote
dombanks Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 What sort of cat do you have? No point in moving it. This chitterchatter about trackers is all over the shop and nothing new. given the home Brew nature of that one I'd say even the moronic end of the scumbag market has got the idea. There seems to be a lot of hoax talk but I'd still be on the side of someone trying their luck with these. Quote
Andy Banks Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 **** Dave or committee *** maybe worth moving this thread to members only area before anything is said that could be useful to any of the scumbags out there Thanks for the heads up, we are looking, listening and discussing... Quote
