hogman Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Since everyone seems to be leaving the IT sector in droves I would like to know where they are going - ie which industry/type of job everyone is moving into! After quite afew years in IT I am thoroughly bored rigid with it all and want to get into the new "Boom" job! So my Q is where is everyone going that is leaving IT? Mobile comms? I wanna go full time with my Cats but there aint the dosh so will have to keep at them part-time and earn the dosh doing this! Hope you can give me a clue! Cheers Kevin Quote
peterg Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Not so much leaving in droves as having their careers 're-directed'......thousands have been made redundant in the last 18 months and there is more to come. A lot of us are still out of work although it's OK if like me they had to give you a lump sum but after 15 years I reckon I deserved it! I know of at least one couple who are both in IT and who have been made redundant in the last 6 months (one of them twice!! which obviously makes things much tougher - my wife's also in IT so she's gritting her teeth and keeping her head down at the moment Some are trying to stay in IT, personally I wouldn't go back as it just doesn't excite me (not enough flashing lights, hex dumps and whirring tape drives anymore ) but I just haven't found the thing I want to do instead (pref something with cars). Not sure what the 'next big thing' is.....guns, tanks and helicopters maybe Quote
westy Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 IMO Yes the market is tough right now but it’s far from over. There are awful lot of job cuts after the hype of Y2K and the so called dot.com failing but I'm not convinced companies have found the equilibrium of just how much IT skills they need. Certainly the pendulum is swinging towards the minimalist mark but given some time it will come back again, it just takes another big trend to come about. One area that I would be concerned about it is the traditional role of the technical analyst. Over the past few years software has become more and more self sufficient and the ability to delegate tasks to line managers (for example password resets) as opposed to a centralised call centre has been the focus. If you can get software to look after itself, heal itself (you already have this with the apps that can be applied through a group policy within an active directory) then there you don’t need the same volume of support staff. Plus with the ability now to re-image a PC back to specification so quickly you don’t need quite as many installation engines either. This is partly the reason I have headed down the development route now as installing and looking after applications just doesn’t have the same sort of scope as it did a few years ago, and as for the future it will be even worse. Whereas companies would always need the software customised for their particular need ….. Don’t panic just yet! Quote
POC Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 pesonaly im only in IT for the money as it bores the S*** out of me, but these days you could go work as a builder at the new terminal and apparently pull £55k.... not bad that, I may 're-direct' my own career and carry bricks about Quote
Mark Stanton Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 POC Don't bank on the construction industry being the next boom cos it's just about to go bang Existing projects are well underway - but new stuff seems to be on the backburner at least until some politicians decide who they want to bomb next Arms and gun running is porbably your best bet to make some money Quote
chrisbin Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Arms and gun running is porbably your best bet to make some money Hmmm, well you might think so......but then if you deal with certain "depts" you will know that one of the main problems is getting them to commit to an order/contract...... ......and when they finally do, its usually after the "situation" has been resolved..... Westfields Rock On Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 become an asylum seeker, then u can just leech off everyone else. step one, dont shower for a week. step two, claim asylum. step three, claim benefits and get free house which you can buy a for a 3rd of its value and sell. Quote
FATBOY Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 I wanna go full time with my Cats but there aint the dosh ......how about breeding them for their fur. Maybe you could even sell pelts made into steering wheel covers and discount them on the WSCC. ......OK, I know, I'm taking the tone of the thread down, but Mr Rock On started plumbing the depths of taste first.
