pre-lit steve Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Does anybody have a crossflow engined car with vdo rev counter that works. If you do could you please let me know how you have the dip switches set at the back. Hoping this is my fault with it. Or can anybody point me to why it isn't working cheers. Quote
Quinten Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 I have a VDO (not sure what product line) rev counter on my Crossflow, but I don't recall seeing any dip switches on the back? VDO does have an instruction manual though: https://www.vdo-gauges.com/instruments-displays-and-clusters/by-series/vision-black/programmable-tachometers/vision-black-4-000-rpm-2-1-16-tachometer-12v.html (ignore the fact it is a 4K rpm gauge, I dont think it matters) Quote

PAUL WYMARK Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 hi if you phone ETB in southend im sure they will help you out as they make them their phone no is 01702601055 Quote
pre-lit steve Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 If I cannot sort it I will have to phone them, It works fine then goes off (drops to zero) then comes back to life when it feels like it. cannot make it replicate the fault at home only when driving I am just wondering if the higher the revs makes it trip out then it resets when the revs come back down? andyismilesaway Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 From memory the dip switches just tell it the pulse it would expect, bases on no of cylinders etc. Is it accurate when it is working? If so sounds like a loose connection somewhere? Earth is always the favorite... Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 There used to be an issue with some ecu's I seem to recall MBE's did it, years ago, where the VDO Rev counter would read ok up to 3 or 4K rpm, then just drop back to zero, or so, once the revs came back down it would read normally. IIRC, the VDO Rev counters need a capacitor, or a resistor or something adding, then they worked fine. Let me have a search... Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Well the old MBE/VDO fix was a 1k resistor across the green +ve feed to the tacho and the black/white signal feed coming from the ecu. Incidentally, although there were a spate of these at the time, as Westfield did an MBE/Jenvey fuel injection kit, VDO/Siemens did say this happened with a number, though certainly not all ecu's. pre-lit steve Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 I don't have an ECU but I am wondering if it still needs a resistor. I phoned the number and he has advised me to check the dip switches and check the connections Looks like the dash will have to come off again! Quote
pre-lit steve Posted August 15, 2016 Author Posted August 15, 2016 And finally, After months maybe a few years it works No loose connections, re crimped the cable on the coil and cleaned the contacts and all is working fine dash back on. Happy days, my mental rev note was slightly out. Quote
