Took advantage of the good weather at the weekend to get my 'in progress' car out of my cramped single garage and on to the driveway to progress my build.

Managed to progress a list of tasks (torqueing rear uprights, riveting bodywork, bleeding brakes) with not much of a discernible physical change to the car!

When I put the car away I had the engine running for probably it's longest time in it's short life as I left it running whilst I moved another car out of the way. When my car was back in the garage I noticed a burning smell and a small amount of white smoke coming out of the exhaust after the engine was off.

Is this normal? This is probably the first time that the exhaust has ever got hot.

Cheers,

Simon.

Have you used exhaust wrap? This can smoke and stink as it cures.

Sure its ok.....

Just replaced the exhaust manifold with a brand new version, on my nippers 106gti pug and thought the thing was on fire with smoke literally billowing out from underneath the bonnet until all the oil and crap was burnt off it....

Yep, with brand new engines and or engine parts it can be quite a surprise the first time they're started up, if you're not expecting it, all sorts of protective coatings, assembly oils, etc get burnt off.
