XTR2Turbo
Actually there is a lot in there that makes sense other than the more logical change of just having a charge on the car when first registered and scrapping the rest and just applying it to the fuel. dombanks
there is yes and it was inevitable it would happen, but the 40K + charge things just seems a bit illogical. buy a new approved 535d touring to tow your caravan get stung for a crap load or just squeeze a m235i in and not pay it. at least it should either be banded or based on some sort of emissions. I can see dealers ending up with a load of cars in the 42K bracket that no one wants
XTR2Turbo
Yes but the problem is they now know the current emissions test is as good a useless for hybrid vehicles. It is likely that most of the larger capacity cars will be diesel or petrol electric hybrids within a few years. It's now just a 'rich' tax rather than an environment tax. The economic reasons for buying a Tesla, I8 etc have largely just gone out the window. More interesting is what the tax will be for plg classified vehicles such as Westfields Also the big problem is this probably applies to the list price not the discounted price. How long before manufacturers have a list price that reflects trade prices and add a small punter 'surcharge' ;-)

People will always pay the money if it's what they want, although I do agree that we might see more of these cars being priced at just under £40K and then a bigger price jump to their next model up.I've only once been in the position to buy a new car and that was 20 years ago. Sadly I don't ever see myself being in the position to spend £40K on new car or even £10K, I'm happy to let someone else take the hit on the depreciation. XTR2Turbo
I wonder if they will change the top band tax that applies to cars today when they are older. Killed the value of old rx8s for example

CraigHew
Its all academic really. If you can afford a £40k car you can afford the tax. We're saving about 30% on petrol at the moment anyway.
XTR2Turbo
Its all academic really. If you can afford a £40k car you can afford the tax.. What a strange thing to say. It's all relative. A lot of people could say the same about a second car. Let's charge £1000 a year for a westy as a luxury The country should be looking at cutting its tax base and public sector waste not trying to extract yet more from the top 10% that already pay 90% of tax collected
jeff oakley
This will be academic in a few years time. There will be a graduated rate ownership tax, tax the wealthy always popular in the jealousy driven country. Then a pence per mile tariff as they will have the EU satellite Galileo full running linked into the telematics being fitted to new cars now. It was always going to come that zero ved would need addressing
dombanks
Sadly the pence per mile thing I can believe

Can't imagine a big step to apply to cars also.
jeff oakley
They do as the plan is Europe wide. It also makes it easier for them as at present there are a lot of roads in the EU without cameras as well as in the UK. On the TV Vauxhall showed an advert recently which was showing the good of having emergency service called automatically. That is done by having a constant live link to the car. Easy step to make the next changes for charging. Not imminent but it will happen if the EU survives
