Meet 10.30am at The Wheatsheaf, Baslow, DE45 1SR.

 

We will resume the 'Reservoir Run' taking the road around the Upper Derwent Reservoirs before going up the Snake Pass to the Snake Inn for lunch. We will maintain direction over the Pass and drop down into Glossop and round to Buxton before finishing off at The Old Smithy, Monyash. If anyone wants to meet us for the lunch stop we will be at The Snake Inn at 12.30.

Collect the gasflowed head on 5th Feb, With the cams fitted. The new head had st170 solid followers (no shims, they are machined to size). It was going to be a long job buying new solid followers or lash caps..so I paid to have it fitted as they said they would grind the posts on the followers.

Start the dry build when I get back to check the valve to piston clearance ..it's moving along

With Russ in Skegness! and of course I picked the wrong weekend for Steve to join us, it meant it was Martyn and Sue and us. It has been one hell of a day I can tell you, we have been off road and driving in a white-out, we have gone off the scale on the exhilaration levels. It is by no means boring here. Martyn is looking in the For Sale section for an Atom Nomad.

I had an artistic moment. Glen has polished my exhaust and Martyn's car reflected lovely in the shine.

 

 

We made our way to the reservoirs, I chose the route over surprise view again, the Mam Tor Ridge looks beautiful with the winter sun on it. We turned down the reservoir road and went forwards this time, it was sideways on the ice last time we tried it. We went all the way to the end of the Upper Derwent and Howden Reservoirs, it is a bit like driving an automatic car, it is third gear and 25 mph all the way. The water flows over the 2 dam walls and the view across the reservoirs is lovely, not a modern building in sight.

 

 

 

 

 

We turned round at the nice, slippy turning point...didn't we Martyn....and made our way up the Snake Pass.

The Snake Pass is not a road where you can get it wrong, or you are going straight down a steep hillside on your way to heaven, so when we hit a hail shower I did get a bit of a thrill. We safely arrived at The Snake Inn and sat by the real fire, there was no need to discuss the merits of mud flaps, my photos say it all.

We were merrily sat chatting over lunch and the sun sort of made an exit and sent Mr Snow to visit us. The Snake Pass is the first road to close in winter, so we called it a day and thought it best to get out of there. Sure enough, when we came down off the Pass, the sun was back out and the roads were dry. It is really worth the drive up there though, for the twisty, exciting roads and the cracking scenery.

We always get home and have a laugh about our day as we wash the car off, today was definitely no exception, it's a buzz. Thank you to Martyn and Sue for joining us today, hope the sun stayed out for the whole of your journey back.

 

Next week we are going to the Donington Museum, everyone is welcome, meet us there in your tin tops if you don't fancy Winter Westfielding, no problem.

I am normally jealous of your lovely day trips in the Peak District - just can't join in due to the journey to get over to you. Today, however, not sad. You may have had stunning scenary etc but I have had the weather - clear blue skies all day. I have been off over the Lincolnshire Wolds to Louth, over to the sea at Sutton on Sea and Skeggy, via the market towns of Alford and Horncastle. Fantastic. Could have done with your company but otherwise could not have been better! Why do some use SORN? Missing out on half of the fun! Pleased to see you had a good day in the snow, rain ....

That looks like a good couple of hours run with a coast road and going past Cadwell Park too, hope you got a bag of fish and chips at the sea side. The weather was perfect yesterday, it was only when we went up high that we got it bad. It was a good job we came down when we did because the Snake Road was CLOSED by 9pm last night due to snow!

 

Might be coming over to Lincoln soon though, the Horsepower at the Hall starts back up in 1 month, perhaps we could go for a run out beforehand as it is an afternoon event nowadays. We must sample some Lincolnshire sunshine.

 

Trevor, good to hear things are skipping along nicely, look forward to seeing the end result. Don't forget Glen's offer still stands too.

Excuse me Andrew, my information is wrong, the Horsepower at the Hall is later in starting this year. The first one is 24th April, which happens to be the same day as 'County Wheels Day' in Woodhall Spa. You know what I am thinking don't you? County Wheels AM and Horsepower at the Hall PM.

I checked this out last night and was going to drop you a note. Didn't know if you (or any others) wanted to come all this way east but was going to suggest trying the Woodhall Spa thingy in the morning (it starts at 11) and moving on to Doddington Hall in the afternoon. I did not go to the Woodhall Spa County Wheels last year (which was its first year) but a lot of people and cars did. There was some congestion which is rare over here! If the County Wheels is not up to much, we can always disappear for a drive over the Wolds to Louth before going back to Lincoln.
