im not sure what they are called but does anyone know where to buy those bracket things you would use to put a bar across the back of a gate or door.

I can find them on American Amazon and ebay from the USA called open bar holders but cant find any here.

there is a gate at the side of my house across the drive that I would like to make a bit more secure with a couple of bars. i cant do anything too complicated as its a rented house so thought these might be a bit sturdier than a simple hasp and staple.

You not tried local garden centre or fence supplier. We have 1 called lanlee in Colne who I bet would have what you want

They are called "drop bars" cos' they drop into the brackets, these are usually custom made, cos' most situations are different, eg reveal sizes, set back of the gate/door etc, your local fabricator will be able to knock some up to suit your situation, he's probably done something similar before, the bar doesn't neccessarily need to be straight. we used to fit them all the time to back doors on Bank and shops and all kinds of place that wanted extra security on back doors.
