It's the 2.0 Ecoboost, four cylinder turbocharged unit. Ford have really pushed this engine as a customer/crate engine in the US, to the extent that it's available with a US Ford Racing ecu as a ready to go unit, from Ford agents. There's also a wealth of upgrades for it in the US already, from Ford and Independant specialists.

They showed us the engine at the last open day, I hadn't realised they were so close to having a running car with it though.

I must have missed it; too busy overfilling my plate with sandwiches probably.

I did see the rotary engine they had there, looked like an interesting package.

It was just next to the rotary, in the corner, BUT, it was one of those things where you needed to have your car bore/geek head on and twig what you were looking at, otherwise it just looked like a modern engine with a tightly packaged turbo stood on an engine stand.

Well done. I passed my trailer test about 3 years ago.

I have many trailer tests under my belt!

But does it mean anything!!

Well done on the test. I am lucky to not need one being an old git. My "test" involved collecting my trailer with trepidation taking it home and disconnecting it to reverse it down my drive with practise I managed over a number of months to be able to reverse it with race car into a single garage down a narrow lane, with minimal scrapes. Thank goodness for rubber wheel arches on a trailer

Thanks, I'm not bad at reversing a trailer, as I said above I leant to drive on a fergie t20 and used to reverse a trailer made from an old lorry bed loaded with hay. Not sure how I made such a hash of it on the test, I put it down to nerves!

Just need to sell my other car, buy a Westfield and trailer and start driving it!

I learnt down on't'farm too! First time on a tractor late teens, with an overloaded flat bed full of hay and a very old Massy. Didn't realise the 'hand' brake was a plate that locked the footbrakes down - so was very smelly when I got to the yard and almost didn't stop!

Sounds good, still yet to do my test, having had a Westfield and lightweight covered trailer for something light eight years, mainly due to work commitments and not quite needing to on the weight. Plenty of time to get horrific habits im sure!

However, I suddenly myself with more time on my hands, so its on the list to get done.

Its barmy isn't it.  They'll let you out on the road in a Westfield or a Bugatti Veyron, even with L Plates, but to tow a trailer you need another test ???

I passed my trailer test about 2 years ago now. I was positively kacking my pants with nerves when I did it! I think it must have been because my Wife did it at the same time and she passed just before I did my test….

In fairness;

a) I can tow a 540kg Westfield, in a 580kg trailer, behind a 1250kg car, on a standard cat b car ticket.

b) Nobody would insure a learner on a Westfield or a Veyron, so its basically not an option.

Max allowable weight of car and max allowable weight of trailer. There's a stage inbetween the latest licenses and post 2000 or whatever ones but I forget most of it now

Yeah, i am pretty certain i would have been ok on my licence with a light trailer but didn't think it was worth the risk, plus i wanted some training to ensure i don't cause an accident through my own stupidity.  The training was really useful and now i know i am definitely ok to to tow what i need.

Am i right in thinking you can tow on a std car category aslong as the overall gross weight doesnt exceed 3.5 ton

From: https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/driving-licence-rules-and-what-you-can-tow

Driving licence rules and what you can tow

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your driving test.

You can view your driving licence information online to see if you’re allowed to tow.

Licences issued from 19 January 2013

From 19 January 2013, drivers passing a category B (car and small vehicle) test can tow:

  • small trailers weighing no more than 750kg
  • a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes) Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM)

If you want to tow a trailer weighing more than 750kg, when the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer is more than 3,500kg, you’ll have to pass a further test and get B+E entitlement on your licence.

You’ll then be able to tow trailers up to 3,500kg.

Licences held from 1 January 1997

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:

  • drive a vehicle up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
  • tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

For anything heavier you need to take a category B+E driving test.

Licences held before 1 January 1997

If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM.

This is the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it’s being used on the road.

You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

I have yet to really bottom out the implications of the changes made in 2013 compared to in 1997, partly as I passed my test in between the two days anyway, however I think its largely a change in the wording, prehaps to suit other changes elsewhere, rather than what you actually can cant/tow.
