Onliest Smeg David Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Hi All I'm sure there will be several of the WSCC collective running VW Camper/Vans. We're looking at buying one next year (converted or to convert), probably a 2.5 130bhp or 2.0 140bhp version (Highline spec). Possibly having remap done post purchase. My Question is... What are they like as a daily driver? What are running costs and insurance like? Any top tips? Muchly Ta in advance for your help. Quote

Pantherman Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 You probably already know this , there is a T4 / T5 Forum that is free to register on and there is absolutely loads of info on there especially stuff around insuring converted vans etc. Dave Quote

XTR2Turbo Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 I um and ah over a motorhome and which one to get. The VW is great because of it's size and usability. I think I would use it as well for a holiday not just the speed series. Down side is they are quite pricey compared to a coachbuilt and I think I would want a shower / toilet cubicle when away for long weekends. Being indecisive all I have at the moment is a Renault Traffic with mattress in the back It did pay for itself October this year. When I arrived THursday evening at 9pm it was 1'C and thick fog and so glad I didn't need to put a tent up. Quote
jeff oakley Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Upside, great to drive, huge following so anything is available, reliable, cheap to run, easy to park and live with on a day to day basis. Downside, too expensive, too small for anything other than weekends away, unless you are happy to use other facilities. No storage space if using for towing a track or race car. Whatever you buy you have a compromise, my Iveco is perfect for us with shower toilet etc and enough room to have tools and bikes. It is a van I converted myself properly, but it is hard to park in any normal car park, slow and the ride is truck like not car like. If you buy a converted VW you can buy a coach built MH for the same money but trade some of the advantages. Quote
Onliest Smeg David Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 Ta Jeff Anything specific to engine/spec choice. (2.5 130bhp or 2.0 140bhp) Several sources say avoid the 180bhp. Will be used for towing my Westie and Wendz MX5. We definitely want small at the moment, especially if suited to daily driver role. If enjoy touring with it probably progress to larger coach built when getting nearer to retirement. Quote
Northwarks Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Give BodyWRX a call in Hinckley (Leics), the guy does amazing VW conversions, customers seem to come from all over the UK to collect conversions or have them done. My son started working there when he left college earlier in the year. https://www.facebook.com/Hinckley-camper-wrx-ltd-256529127753391/ Quote

dombanks Posted December 25, 2015 Posted December 25, 2015 Is the camper based pn a t5 transporter van? If so i recently had one as a hire van and did and spent a reasonable amount of time in it. My impressions on it given i usually drive a z4 were i was amazed at how easy it was. Yes it felt huge but the seats were really comfy. It went like the clappers. At one point when i wast paying attention and you do that thing where when your overtaking the guy speeds up a bit it happliy sailed past 90. Fuel gonsumption was around 35-40 mpg. Steering was light and easy. Felt just like my mates golf inside. Radio was a bit tinny. I was genuinely surprised at how refined it was. Too big for me as a daily drive. It was frustrating in car parks as i like small cars. Quote
Onliest Smeg David Posted December 25, 2015 Author Posted December 25, 2015 TaDom A T4 / T5 is only slightly larger footprint than my Octavia (current daily) Quote
