Buying a Tin top .. Advice needed

Recommended Posts

I started working abroad (Holland) February this year and with that the old tin top was outed leaving me with a little cash in the bank, which subsequently got spent on my Westfield in July... Ideal I thought as; I'm hardly ever home and don't really have a need for another car as I can use the missus corsa when required. However, over past couple months it's been a bit awkward when both of us need to use the car, none more so than me borrowing her car to go to Holland to bring some of my stuff back before Christmas.

This all got me thinking that maybe a cheap run-around would be ideal for me so I've been having a look around online for something under 2k that I'd actually enjoy driving when I can't drive westy (sorry seonad the 1.2 corsa isn't doing it for me!).

So far I keep coming back to a focus st170 purely because I had one for about 6years, I like them and for less than 2k you seem to be able to get a half decent one.

My question is, does anyone have any advice or other suggestions of cars I should be looking out for in this budget? Or should I up my budget a bit and scratch the type-r itch?

Luckily due to mileage fuel economy is not important, but I don't want to spend a fortune on maintenance so anything German seems to be off the cards!

Help much appreciated! :-)

Mazda RX' 8s are cheap now and a big choice out there at around £1k.    £2k will get you one of better ones.  Bit of a faff with fuel and oil thing  but a fun car with 4 seats.

Buy a subaru WRX!

With petrol cost being low it's about the only time your be able to run one and not cry at the petrol pump!

I have had two, first one was a classic, bought it for £850 used it for a year and did 9k miles, no issues, alot of fun, sold it for £600,

My current one is a 2002 newage the wife uses to go to work and back and i nick to go biking at weekends (it's a wagon!) i paid 2k for it 2 years ago, we have done 19K in it no issues. I got a simple remap which puts if at around 270bhp.

It really is very fast but to be honest its the whole package that appeals! the noise, the grip from the AWD. It's fun pottering to the shops or hooning down a B road! I really don't think there is anything to match it at the 2k price mark! My friend had a type R and I have had a few hot hatch's before (clio 172cup, mini cooper s Golf GTI etc) but nothing comes close to be honest!

make sure you get a unmolested one though!

Ha ha awesome, cheers guys... Plenty of good suggestions! I had seen few RX8s online, but I was a bit concerned about the state of the engines due to poor maintenance!

I genuinely hadn't even considered an impreza. I shall keep my eyes peeled for a good one!

RX8 are great - we had one for a couple of years and had to do the coil packs (ouch) to help it start. Fuel was only 20 25 at best but the sound was lovely and a real treat to drive

Only thing is they are rubbish - really rubbish in the snow - no torque and wide tyres (no pressure in the snow) it also  means you cannot set off in second as it has no torque :-(

Good practicality for small people in the back and a lovely drive if you give it the beans but a little sluggish unless you do so.
