Yep.  Behind a new Audi A2 at a roundabout this evening.  Sat with his/her foot on the brakes.  Retina burning blinding.  Ridiculous.

Agree - I wear tinted yellow glasses now for the rear lights when driving in London and sat at traffic lights. People with no sense of other road users can't bothered with a handbrake and insist on sitting there with their foot on the brake!

I thought it was just me - the HID's are just too bright.

 

I stopped using the auto hold on my current car as soon as I found out it was keeping the brake lights on even when my foot wasn't on the brake pedal, I can't stand the glare from the myriad of brake lights.  I always put car into park or put handbrake on to avoid glaring others behind.

that's a bigger problem with new auto's with stop start systems. while stopped with brake on the engine stops, as soon as you release the brake it comes back on even if you then put it in park or neutral. I am sure there is a way but have not found it yet. At times you are conscious of having your foot on the brake for a prolonged period but kind of feel between a rock and hard place, either waste fuel or be a bit of a pain to those behind, Sorry but saving money tends to win.

Rhett - on mine I can just press the 'P' button with my foot on the brake and engine stays off.

 

I often get stuck at level crossings, so start/stop saves probably 5+ minutes of idle each way to/from work (if battery level supports it).

Is it just me or is every forth car coming the other way trying to blind you?

 

Modern cars suffer from bright bulbs with appalling reflectors  and lenses, made to look sexy, and dummies who don't know how to adjust them (usually a little switch on the dash - never a Westfield option)

Oh how we criticise modern driving standards and machinery coupled with technology. Surely all these new devices and methods must be an improvement over the old systems. I'm a good believer in "If it ain't broke don't fix it" so why the hell are we putting up with our retinas being destroyed by drivers who don't know if they have a parking brake, auto hold or the common sense to realise they are blinding people behind them. Or using fog lamps the day after the fogs gone, oh dear what are those yellow and green lights on the dash for and those nice people are saying hello by flashing at me.

 

The police are way too busy studying for their possible degree requirements (todays news, keep up ) to warn people that they are basically incompetent  lacking in experience.

 

Bring back hanging

There are many reasons in my mind for what is happening. One is the EU. The mandarins there seem to dictate what needs to be done for our own good, daylight running lights is an example. It may well save one or two lives of people who can spot a bright light but not the two ton car attached to them.

Then we have the EU and the tree huggers to blame for reducing emissions by turning cars on and off, needing a brake to be pressed or handbrake on before they start.

 

Then we have the company car user chooser who wants more toys the "R Us" to play with. So they load them up with ever more complicated electronics to give a play station feel to the car which again means they no longer have to switch lights on or off (except in fog) systems to keep them in lane, cars that park themselves so the dim-witted nunneys who cannot drive can blame the car when it takes 20 attempts to park. 

 

Just because we can fit these things shouldn't mean we should do that, ABS yes, cars that judge your mood and drive accordingly (new Jag feature apparently) might not be so good. Unless it would match my mood sometimes and grow hub cap scythes and machine guns to deal with certain people, then might be okay

I don't blame them for everything, but working in the industry I do you would not begin to believe some of the dictates that are being considered by the EU regarding personal transport.

Car design has been driven by some good ideals, crash safety, ABS etc are some good examples, but with the lighting aims that have given rise to daylight running and these stupidly bright lights is one where the aim has been taken over by the Lunatics.

They listen to "the road safety lobby" who are trying to convince many that people driving is a very bad idea, when they can be replaced by autonomous cars and trucks to do it better, which is why we are spending millions on research to be leaders in that technology and yet all the surveys suggest that people do not want or trust that task to others.

We need to enjoy our freedoms on the road whilst we can.
