Thinking of buying a Sonos £600 sound bar for my 46" Samsung TV

What do you guys think?

Overpriced wifi router board in an expensive box! And I say that even though I am used to things like B&W and Crestron these days.

If you want to spend that sort of money get a proper 5.1 AVR (Denon or Marantz. They actually the same circuitry in a different box. The Marantz is much smaller) and some speakers or get a MUCH better soundbar: There are plenty on Amazon for much less than the Sonos and with a sub.

This one is not "much less" but I have heard these and they sound very good. Much better than a Sonos I'll wager but I have never compared them side by side.

Denon 4K AVR

Marantz version...

Saw my first 4K content last week on a 50ish inch Samsung. Really amazing.

Been upgrading a Crestron DM HD matrix switcher to 4K over the last week or so. We're going to run a test on Wednesday on the first leg of the distribution system ready to go 4K end to end. Looking forward to seeing the result.

Oh, and dislike Sonos with a passion...

Another anti SONOS here!

Personally I'd go for one with a separate Subwoofer, to get much better Bass reproduction and help avoid rattles through TV etc on the TV stand.

Bass is not directional like treble, so a Subwoofer can be placed anywhere convenient in the room out of sight.

And decent Bass makes a big difference to viewing films especially.

Have a looksee through these...

Although as Blatman says, for that price you could spend your money far wiser!

Check out some AVs and Speaker packages

If you already have a suitable HiFi may be better running TV through that (if speakers will work either side of TV)

I'm currently running the TV through my Chord Electronics/B&W HiFi

Apart from the surround sound /effects I need something which improve the diction and makes it clearer to hear

You and me both. Sonos caused me to see my first ever broadcast storm on a production network.

Crestron DM has been a lot better since they upgraded it recently.

Any decent sound system will do that. Sonos is not decent in this respect in my experience. And remember on top of the speaker in the box you are also paying for the wifi router that's in there too.

Ive got a Sonos system Terry if you want to pop over hand have a listen before you shell out.

Ive got the sound bar, two play1s and the subwoofer.

Due to my limited IT skills I need a simple plug and play speaker system I think

Of course it's in the lugholes of the hearer.

I remember auditioning some very expensive highly rated speakers, and wondering 'Why?'

So do listen to as many different systems as you can before you choose.

I was quite taken with the orbit sound system when I saw it in johnnylooloos

Nice sound and nice and compact which is a priority for me. only one cable for the technically savvy

I love Sonos

I also know quite a lot about sound (a 25 year career so far)

Please can somebody translate this into English

Any version of TV soundbars would sound better than just the TV speakers.    You need to visit an AV or Hi Fi shop and listen to some set ups in their demo rooms to decide. Listen to the best and  a budget set up, then listen to some £500 options, only your ears will decide on what you like the best.
