can anyone point me in the right direction of how to make a small tracking device. what im thinking probably already exists but id like to know how they work.

what i was thinking was the kind of thing where you use a sim card and text it and then it will text you back a gps location?

ive seen a few of these sorts of things for cars that are pretty cheap so i guessing the tech cant be overly complicated but i have no idea at all how they work or whats in them?

Didn't Adam Reeves fit something along the gps lines?

yeah they are what made me think about it all as a few of the Z4 lot have them just send it a text and it texts back a coordinate.... bit big to tie to my cat tho

i know you can get some things already but they all seem a bit big and i wondered what actually is in them. im guessing a gps reciever, sim card holder, some sort of microprocessor and a some sort of transmitter. cant be that big surely given the size of mobile phones.

did also think about strapping an old nokia to him!

I think an old Android phone would actually be a really good solution, plenty of apps for tracking lost phones, battery is going to last maybe a week, so it won't matter if the car battery gets disconnected and if god forbid the car should ever go walkies, you could call the phone when you think your getting close to finding it. My old HTC Wildfire would do it easily and I know you can pick those up used for < £30.
