:ww: Odins Beard,     yes there's a few different engine options, best to go for the most modern you can afford,   FW bodywork is radically different to the others which are the classic style and they will look the same to most of us as well.  Check out as many Westfields as you can in the next couple of months by going to meets & trackdays, there is an infinite number of options on our cars and mostly owner suited, a lot to take in.    A good chassis, engine and bodywork is a good starter then all the rest can easily be changed to make it your own.

Thanks SootySport, I agree on the engine. I've been working with old ford engines for the last eight years and it's definitely a labour of love. Duratecs seem very well supported for spares, upgrades and tuning options.

Thanks for the hello's from all the club AOs I will have to get to a club meet nearby before the weather turns properly. I'm just renting just East of Swindon at the moment but moving to Amesbury in a month or so if the house purchase goes through. It's been two years in the making with six houses falling through for one reason or another!

Thanks again Dave,

I will definitely be taking your advice and just live with whichever car I get for a while.

I'll probably get back 1/2 to 2/3 of what I spent on my last car project when it sells unless someone comes along who loves it for what I've done. But then we don't have these to sit in a garage as an investment really do we?

Went out for a drive this afternoon in the lovely weather which was great fun with the windows down. Hope to do the same next year without a roof!

Incidentally I will need to get my towing licence sorted; does anyone know where you can get intensive tuition and get the test cracked in a short period of days?

I used Sue's driving school for one lesson and then a test. She's based near Wootton Bassett.

Thanks Dommo, I've just sent her an email. Did you do the test in her vehicle and trailer? If it's in Swindon did you have to over the magic roundabout!

Cheers

Edit: just been on the DVSA.GOV website and it says I can tow a trailer with a combined weight of 3500kg including the weight of the towing vehicle and the weight of the trailer on my licence.

How much does a Westfield plus average trailer weigh? The unladen weight of my car is 1700kg which leaves me 1800kg for everything else if I read that right?

I think that's the MAM of the car and the MAM of the trailer not exceeding 3,500kg.

Yeah I did the magic roundabout. Lucked out a bit, just had to turn left! Magic roundabout is easy because you're technically too long to go across the middle so just go around the outside. I used my vehicle and her trailer though shot myself in the foot a little bit as my tow vehicle is an auto so have that restriction on the B+E. I've not tried to get that removed yet.

Ah, ok the exact wording of the DVSA is:

"Licences held from 1 January 1997

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:

drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM

tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg"

My car has the following stats:

1685kg Kerb weight

2160kg Permitted gross weight (MAM)

1230kg Rear axle load limit

For towing:

750kg Unbraked trailer limit

1800kg With break on upward incline up to 12%

1345kg Rear axle load limit

2235kg Permitted gross weight (MAM)

So does that mean my MAM of vehicle at 2235kg leaves me to tow a trailer with MAM of 1265kg or less?

Or

Does it mean that I calculate off the kerb weight of the car + their kerb weight of the trailer + the kerb weight of the Westfield combined being less than 3500kg?

All a bit confusing!

Yeah I just spoke to Sue and she said that I would need to do the test snd get B+E to be compliant. She's sending me her prices and details this afternoon. To be honest it will probably make me a much safer driver too.

Looks like I will have to try and break all of my bad habits I've picked up in the last 18 years!
