I think I want a Ford ST220 for the DD...

OK... Just spent 4 hours in my p*** coloured 1.8 '06 Ford Mundane and you know for an old cheap disposable motor, its not too bad.

Would not de-skin a rice pudding but its a sweet drive for what it is (a boggo 4 door sales rep shifter)

I've always thought the ST220 version would be a nice car. Possibly the best compromise between price / practicality / vroom vroom

I could afford a decent newish motor but really don't want to spend the money unless I'm genuinely convinced I am getting a return on it.

Yes, they are getting a little bit long in the tooth, but I would be happy to pay fair money for a loved low milage run out special.

Anybody want to convince me otherwise or suggest something similar?

Budget is up to £8k only rules are it needs to be a four door Q type car around the 200hp mark and <100k miles (and I'm sorry but no Beemers, I know they are dynamically great but the badge isn't for me). I only do 3k miles a year so fuel economy is not an issue.

Would be nice if the local garage could fix it and they mostly do tractors.

"Can I book my car in for a service, its a Mondeo"

"OK is that spelt M A S S E Y F E R G U S O N?"

"It's a car not a tractor..."

"Oh... One of those fancy posh boy Combine Harvesters is it..?"

"Sigh..."

ST220 is a great car - I'd say go for it before everyone tries to persuade you into an Audi or Skoda :)

Tempted... For that money I can keep the 1.8 as well just in case its off the road for a while (or for TSO to drive)

Does anybody know of any tidy ones lurking about..?

Get the diesel version, same spec more mpg. Just watch for high mileage diesels with rattly timing tensioner.

Chaps, I do so few miles I don't care about mpg.

I fill up once a month and spend way more on beer than I do petrol.

I reckon the ST would do high 20's for mpg and I could live with that.

Looking at the last MOT certs, I average 3k a year.

I just want those 3k to be moderately interesting..!

I had a v6 mondeo basically the ghia version of the st24

The v6 was a great engine. Sounded ace with the jan speed exhaust it had. Felt pretty quick. I really liked that car.

But .... A mate had a 3.0l beemer and basically it was just better all round l. Faster and better on fuel.

Mazda 6mps seems a good buy and fits the bill for what you are after if you are looking for alternatives.

Focus ST with the ovloV 5 banger. Pretty sure there are 5 door versions available. and they are about the same size as the Mk2 Mondeo. Swapped my Mk2 diesel Mondeo for a Mk2 Diesel Focus a few years ago and the Focus is so much better in every single way.

How about a tuned Skoda or Audi :d

Think you might get a Golf V6  for 3k.  Good Q car.

Now that is a good shout..!

Also been wondering about the Passat 4.0 W8, makes lots of sense until we get to servicing, it might as well be a spaceship as far as the local garage would know.

Courtesy of Clarkson on PooToob from TG where he reviewed the ST220 and the 6 MPS (we won't mention the tangential Vectra) I did consider the Mazda.

Seems to tick all the mechanical boxes but I really struggle with Jap interiors (neighbour has a 2.0l and I've sat in it and not really likey)- yes, yes I am being picky, but this purchase if purely because I want it, so I will continue to behave like a spoilt child in a sweet shop...

ST 220 is a great car ...a wolf in sheeps clothing a couple of friends have had them in saloon and estate versions and they were fantastic cars with the leather recaro's etc a very well spec'd car. I've had a couple of the diesel ST's biggest problems on them are EGR valves and injectors. ST220 are a rare beast on the road these days ............go for it
