Mohair, double duck or vinyl

I'm getting a tonneau cover made and I have been offered the above material the mohair and double duck are nearly 3 times the price of the vinyl but would it be worth spending the exter money? Cheers

No experience of double duck. Mohair is great as a hood material, certainly, needs a little maintenance to keep it nicely water proof, bi put nothing tricky. It might be my imagination though, but it does seem very stretchy? No problem with a hood frame pulling it taught, but not sure on a tonneau cover? Would be be made and fitted by the company? 'Cause if they're fitting it, I'd be so tempted by the mohair! I just wouldn't want to have to fit it and deal with any stretchy ness, myself. (Conversely, soft top/tonneau/hooding vinyl s actually less stretchy than ordinary interior vinyl!)

My local trimmer is going to make and fit it so it will use all the existing popstuds. He said mohair is the best but because of the width if the material it will cost around £100 more than the double duck

As I said previously, I've no experience of double duck hooding - it was a tightly woven cotton material (treated?) used commonly on vintage and pre-war stuff. My understanding, (but it could be wide of the mark) is that while it posses excellent water proofing properties, it isn't as effective as Mohair, (or hooding vinyl, like Everflex etc). I also was under the impression that it isn't quite as durable as the Mohair/vinyl option.

Personally, if it was being fitted for me, and I was having it on a, ahem, more polished, more show type road car, (as opposed to a track day car), I'd go for Mohair if i could afford to. Otherwise, I'd go for a proper hooding grade type vinyl and save some cash.

(would love, ultimately, to get my own full hood re-made in Mohair - with a load of modifications!)

I've got some samples coming so I can have a good look befor I decided on what to go for

One advantage could be the performance in cold weather , vinyl goes stiff in the cold , its a tough job to stretch over the poppers when its cold , not too much of a problem with tonnue but a real pita job with a vinyl hood .

dunno about the others but i think they may be better to handle in the cold than vinyl

It was said that Vinyl worked best for an everyday car because it doesn't matter if you put it away damp whilst both the others would be problematic. For a pampered garaged show car I guess that it doesn't matter and the cloths certainly look better.

Thanks guys when the samples arrive I'll have a look at the vinyl and see what it's like and maybe save my penny's for when I get a new rear braced roll bar and get a nice mohair hood mad with all the little mods on it..... Sounds like an idea for a new thread "your ultimate hood"
