Probably 90% of caving I've done has been off Gaping Gill main chamber Only head up for couple of nights fun n banter with my mate these days note THIS is NOT advertising a caving trip! It's a scenic drive to Clapham where there are a good pub and cafe, followed by a picturesque 30 minute walk up to Gaping Gill entrance. You will then be winched down into the main chamber in a secure 'chair' There will be highly knowledgeable guides to give you a tour of the main chamber, which is spectacularly lit up. You will require waterproofs and walking boots. Hard hat provided by Craven Pothole Club. But definitely get there early to avoid any queuing. There are very few opportunities to see unspoilt natural wonders like this. Davep1 Posted August 10, 2015 Share Posted August 10, 2015 Many (many) years ago, before H&S, and safety ropes etc, the winchman used to free-run the winch down, and use to brake it just in time (paint mark on winch rope). If he had a few beers at the camp the night before, it was advisable to wait an hour or two for him to sober up!! One of the great experiences in life...! Dave. The funniest bit is that when we were stood at the bottom, cavers would just appear out of a hole in the side wall, and then get a lift back up. It is a fantastic experience that you never forget. I've been down many times, and been one of the scary muddy visions emerging from the dark side tunnels Always in August though with my mates club. I am up there this year, not been for a couple.
