Onliest Smeg David Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Anyone around the Yorkshire Dales area 22nd-31st August? Fancy something a bit different? I can highly recommend this as a fantastic experience.... Quote
Davep1 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Done this many times in the past - try it you wont regret it, but get there early! Dave. Quote

Onliest Smeg David Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 Done this many times in the past - try it you wont regret it, but get there early! Dave. Probably 90% of caving I've done has been off Gaping Gill main chamber Only head up for couple of nights fun n banter with my mate these days note THIS is NOT advertising a caving trip! It's a scenic drive to Clapham where there are a good pub and cafe, followed by a picturesque 30 minute walk up to Gaping Gill entrance. You will then be winched down into the main chamber in a secure 'chair' There will be highly knowledgeable guides to give you a tour of the main chamber, which is spectacularly lit up. You will require waterproofs and walking boots. Hard hat provided by Craven Pothole Club. But definitely get there early to avoid any queuing. There are very few opportunities to see unspoilt natural wonders like this. As t'other Dave said 'try it you won't regret it' Dave Edit ------ AND I'm NOT 'Mad' or 'Raving' Quote
DerekJ Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 I used to be a caver when I was a lot younger and have spent many a happy (and wet) hour in that system. The main caven is impresive to say the least, well worth a visit to be winched down in a comfey chair. Quote
TAFKARM Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 That's all my worst nightmares in one go 1 Quote
Davep1 Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Many (many) years ago, before H&S, and safety ropes etc, the winchman used to free-run the winch down, and use to brake it just in time (paint mark on winch rope). If he had a few beers at the camp the night before, it was advisable to wait an hour or two for him to sober up!! One of the great experiences in life...! Dave. Quote
Kingster Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 If you like that - you should try this http://www.cenotedosojos.com/ The bit where you dive in between two caves is cool Not me - my camera was poo - but gives you an idea (sorry for hijack!) Quote
Julie Hall - WSCC AO Representative Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Definitely something you must do, put it on your bucket list, it is amazing. More people have climbed Everest than have descended into Gaping Gill. Glen on his way down Glen waiting at the top I went too Quote
Julie Hall - WSCC AO Representative Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Yes it was May Spring Bank Holiday, I think in 2007. The funniest bit is that when we were stood at the bottom, cavers would just appear out of a hole in the side wall, and then get a lift back up. It is a fantastic experience that you never forget. Have you done it before? Are you doing it in August? Quote
Onliest Smeg David Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 I could tell it was May by the set up. I've been down many times, and been one of the scary muddy visions emerging from the dark side tunnels Always in August though with my mates club. I am up there this year, not been for a couple. The tourist trip is a great experience and great value. 1 Quote
