My dad and myself have just bought a westfield and are planning on doing a few sprints and hillclimbs with it. However we are not sure on what the regulations say about what grade of race suit we can use, does it have to be fia legal etc. or does it just have to be a fireproof suit?

Thanks

It has to be FIA. One of the first things you need when starting out sprinting is a non-race National B licence from the MSA. When you get that, you also get the current edition of their general regulations, known as the blue book (because it is blue!). That tells you what you need for the given motorsport discipline you wish to do.

So in terms of clothing, you'll need a nomex suit, nomex gloves and a helmet meeting MSA requirements. Beware, the regs are in the process of changing, although a HANS device is not required yet it will be in the next year, so make sure you get a helmet which has HANS posts fitted. It is also sensible, although not strictly a requirement for sprinting, to have nomex lined race boots.

FIA1986 is the minimum reg for the suit

Hans will only be needed for non Road going cars next year, but longterm it is likely to move to the lowerclasses so as has been said get a helmet with Hans posts. Also don't rush to buy a helmet as Snell 2015 should be out in October.
