My dads looking at Westfield that has an 1820cc CVH engine built by ferriday engineering, does any one know anything about the 1820cc engines? Are they any good? And what sort of power are the putting out?

They were a very highly regarded engine builder in their day and possibly the acknowledged CVH specialist; I'm sure I recall one of our ex-chairmen, Mark Stanton having one of their engines - to great effect, in his old Westfield.

The only thing I know about CVH is they run hydraulic lifters and are extremely sensitive to engine oil viscosity and quality.

Also that they were primarily used during the 80's/90's when Mobil was pushing it's extreme low viscosity engine oils and as a result many of them probably ended up on the scrap heap well before their time.

Ah, that cold clammy feeling on the back of your neck when someone proudly proclaimed "only ever run it on Mobile 1", I've walked away from a few second hand cars I'd been to look at, at that point, over the years.

I had my pinto head machined and assembled by Ferriday engineering following plenty of recommendations from the members of the club - still going strong 7 or 8 yrs later.

IIRC he moved from stoke-on-trent to wales a few years back.

I think the larger CVH engines were fitted to Sierras

I had a 1991 Sierra Ghia with a 1.8 litre CVH engine. Horrible car - not because of the engine though, just horrible in general. Mainly the lack of power steering made it feel heavy and sluggish, but also the Pierburg carburettor fiddled with the throttle pedal on the over-run and I just didn't feel in control. The pedal moved on its own!

Brother Peter AKA Pistonbroke 2 had a Ferriday tuned CVH in his first Westy it sounded great , sold and replaced by an SEight which also sounded great  :t-up:
