Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 One of my chaps is due a new small van So looking at the fiesta van - however he has requested a petrol engined one (he would prefer the refinement) He does about 13k miles per year (will keep van for 5 years ish) Is buying petrol a realistic option? - I assume mpg would be worse (even considering cheaper petrol) as would resale value come time to sell? Personally I would prefer to buy diesel for the above reasons but could be persauded Anyone in the know? Quote
Kit Car Electronics and Essex AO Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Since the brilliant 1.0 Ecoboost isn't listed for Fiesta Van, with my Ford hat on, I'd go for the 1.6 TDCI for a genuine 60mpg with 200Nm torque and for the reasons you state, Clark. Quote
jeff oakley Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 We run a fleet of 300 plus vans and upto last year I would have said Diesel, however. Due to the Euro 6 regulations many of the small vans are now being forced to run on fresh air by using DPF and injecting Urea based fluids into them. We had so many problems with DPF failures as the regen fails on Vauxhall vans we no longer use them. We have concerns wit the new Citroen vans we run. So unless they are doing mega miles on motorways at higher speeds then I would seriously consider petrol. In fact in the last fleet magazine there was an article suggesting that the Green lobby were forcing fleets to look at petrol as Diesel is now seen as a problem. Islington today have announced an additional £96 per year resident parking if you own a Diesel car so it will not be long before it grows further. Quote
SootySport Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 For only 13k miles a year I would go with the petrol motor for the lad. Derv's are getting mighty expensive to run maintainence wise and the fuel is 8 or 9p. per litre more. Quote
Cleggy the Spyder Man Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 thanks for the input chaps the combined mpg on the petrol is 52.3mpg compared to 78.5mpg for the diesel - my wife runs a petrol mini and you really have to work it through the gears to make progress which makes the MPG suffer Quote

B.RAD Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 We have this conversation a lot at work, easiest thing to do is make up a spreadsheet showing the running costs for each van, including purchase price/rental cost, cost per litre of fuel, likely fuel consumption (have you got a current actual achieved for the lad as opposed to manufacturer predicted?), RFL cost, service and insurance etc. You might find that the purchase price difference and cost of fuel difference alone makes the petrol more economical in the long run. The DPF issue is a good one to highlight, if the mileage is lots of short journeys then DPF can be a nightmare, you need to regularly do journeys of 15-20 miles or more where you can average over 50mph for at least a mile in order to keep the filter clear. If it's lots of local journeys then it will clog up quickly and they're very expensive to replace. Quote
