I’m tentatively offering up my Westfield for sale – just testing the water at this stage as I don’t particularly want or need to sell up, but life priorities are starting to change a bit and I wouldn’t mind having some money in the bank rather than sat in the garage!

In terms of the history, this car was purchased by a friend of mine as a bit of an eBay special a couple of years ago. It had a lot of potential but the performance wasn’t blowing him away – an issue compounded when he dropped a grub screw down one of the carbs and then fired it up….

At this point a quick refresh became a full rebuild, carried out by a mutual friend of ours who owns a Lancia Montecarlo and knows these engines inside out. Details of the build can be found here:

I purchased this car last year having seen and been out in it several times and tracked its progress in the hands of Phil. Since purchase I have carried out the following:

Full geo setup and corner-weighting by NMS (this absolutely transformed the handling)

Oil and filter change with 10W/60 full synthetic oil

Replaced old digi-dash with a set of Westfield gauges and VDO speedo

Hand-made bare alloy dash panel

All fully wired in, configured etc by NMS. This including rewiring virtually the whole car including relays and fuse boxes. It’s a beautiful job!

New rear brake cylinders (MK2 Escort)

R1 Carbs balanced by NMS

The engine is a fantastically characterful lump – it has bags of torque low-down but when it hits cam at about 4k it really flies. I’ve never known a 4-pot to sound so good!

This isn’t an immaculate garage queen by any stretch of the imagination. It has been used as a rack and sprint car in the past I believe, so there’s no interior worth mentioning and the bodywork has its fair share of scrapes and marks (including where a timing post was mounted to the nose). In truth I have no idea of the mileage – the previous digi-dash didn’t have the odometer set up so the reading was ‘stuck’ at about 14,000. The new gauges (from BCF’s car) read about 15,500, but the general accuracy of this on a car like this doesn’t really worry me.

As part of my ongoing refresh there are a few additional bits outstanding that I will be doing if I end up keeping it:

The Avo shocks are really too short and stiff for road use. It’s OK with two people in but when lightly loaded (i.e. 10 stone of me!) it can skip around a bit on bumpy roads. My plan was to take it to Procomp for a replacement set of coilovers and associated setup which will transform its roadholding. (It does handle beautifully on track though!)

The Fiat 5-speed box crunches into 5th if you rush it. I have a spare gearbox that will be included in the sale (along with a tonneau cover, MegaJolt kit and a few other bits  have lying around to go on!)

The guys at NMS commented that the diff could use a rebuild reasonably soon.

MOT is due in about 6 weeks.

It’s a little difficult to value such an unusual westy but as it stands I’d be looking for about £6,500. Obviously I’m open to offers but to go much lower there’s really not much point in me selling 

Alternatively I’ll hang onto it, work my way through the above list and enjoy the car for another 9-10 months before re-evaluating come Spring. I’ll be home all of this weekend if anyone wants to view, and I’m doing a multi-marque sprint at Woodbridge next Sunday (21st) if anyone local wants to pop along.
