SootySport
Won't be an earth wire Q, the starter is bolted to the engine so plenty of metallic contact to provided a zero ohm path.
Quinten
I cleaned up the area (and other parts) and put the starter back in. Turned ignition on and pressed the starter button. Fired first time Tested it a couple of times, and each time it just started, so am quietly confident I've solved it by cleaning up the mounting/earthing. As a side note, it is only held in with 2 out of 3 bolts, so if anyone knows what thread these should be, then I'll get another bought.
Kit Car Electronics
Good news Q! My Type 9 bellhousing is either std M10 or M12 - can't remember which. Looking at your photo though, I don't think there's a tapping in the bellhousing for the 3rd screw?
Quinten
Cheers, M10 seems to be a common find on Google, so will get another flanged bolt somewhere. It is threaded for 3, as I put one of the bolts in the previously unoccupied position
