Now run my own self-build housing consultancy (think Grand Designs) and run courses on self building and project management in Swindon along with being resident 'Expert' for Build It magazine writing articles and giving advice at self build shows. I did manage to build two houses from scratch doing 99% of the work myself and had 5 employees before I was 30. These days i work alone, some days my finances can look good, other days I can be strangling customers for payment. I can work 80+ hours a week, get called out at 5am or 9pm whilst sat in a restaurant with my mrs or at Legoland with the kids, I've cleared the mortgage yet will still probably end up working til I'm 60-70...BUT, some days, if the weather is right, I can say '**** it' and take the day off to blat in the Westie without having to ask anyone's permission, I guess life isn't all that bad. It's a surprisingly varied job, and I get to travel around the country visiting anything from 20 user SMBs to large enterprise companies. The most I can claim to have saved someone was £18,000. He was being charged VAT on labour by his builder when there was no requirement. He was a happy bunny! Amen to that. The beauty of working for yourself from home. That's why I was able to build my Westy in just 9 months. I was 'working' but with a smartphone by your side no one knows if you are slaving away in the office or up you your neck in grease and rivets in the garage! I work everywhere from all those boring nuclear and coal-fired power stations, oil refineries and chemical works to food factories and car production plants. Monitorlizard Posted May 10, 2015 Share Posted May 10, 2015 Been retired now for 4 1/2 years,prior to that I had worked for nigh on 30 years in the offshore drilling industry,after leaving the RAF.Started at the bottom,progressed to crane operator,Deck Supervisor & Safety Training Coordinator.Had 3 1/2 years working in Trinidad,after 20 odd years in the North Sea,then finished off working offshore Egypt.Did a hasty retreat from Egypt,when the Arab Spring kick off.Turned quite nasty,locals decided that we were not wanted any more.When that happened the drilling company pulled the plug,so they all lost their jobs.Very short sighted people.Now catching up for all the time spent away from home.
