Is the engine stolen?

Hi All

 

I'm currently looking for a new engine for my Megabusa after my one threw a con rod at Goodwood last weekend.

 

Does anyone know how I can check if an engine has been stolen, normally you can check the VIN when buying a car but just checking an Engine number seems to be difficult.

 

Was thinking maybe ask my local Suzuki dealer, but does any one else have any other ideas or web sites that i could use?

Had a similar problem with my VX engine, a friendly police officer did a quick check and couldn't find anything but it was almost impossible without a VIN number or reg. They only go back 6 years or so I'm told. The dilemma is you don't want to be sponsoring dodgy motors nor do you want to miss out on a replacement engine. Would you need to change the engine number for DVLA I guess so.

Do you suspect that the engines you are considering may be stolen?

Always a possibility Tel unless you know the pedigree of course.

No not even got one in the pipe line yet, just been looking around auction sites etc and suddenly occurred to me that breaking up a stolen bike has to be the easiest way of tea leafs selling it one to make money!

Obviously other options are sourcing from known sources like Yorkshire Engines or Extreme Engines etc, but obviously want to get the best price i can, especially as I'll be adding a dry sump to it which isn't cheap either!

I would have thought the DVLA and the Police have the technology to let you know if an engine number is from a stolen engine, as every V5 I have seen has the engine number written on it. It shouldn't be hard for them to put the engine number on the database as well as the VIN number and REG.

I think they should, and it would be good if that was available.

A lot might not bother to check, through ignorance or willful ignorance, but if you cant check thats a whole 'nother ball game.

Somewhat cynical, but I would be both impressed and surprised if the DVLA computer was cunning enough to spot if you swapped your engine serial number to the engine serial number of a car/bike that was reported stolen by the police. That said, occasionally I am surprised and impressed by things.

Don't think the police will help much but you never know I was fortunate, but got the impression it wasn't there job unless there was a crime to be reported.

I remember some years back the police visiting various paddocks during club bike races to check both frame and engine numbers for stolen stuff, this included engines fitted in side car outfits so they must have had some sort of database to check with? They also had a purge on some of the track days I attended?

In the end I'm avoiding the issue all together as have decided to source the engine from Rob at Mistral along with Dry Sump kit etc. Means i'll get a nice refreshed engine which I know will work correctly and as a bonus no need to worry about stolen engines!

In this past they have checked to see if they HAD numbers. They were impounding anything without frame or engine numbers or defaced numbers. Can be frustrating if it's a race bike as sometimes they don't have numbers on the frames.
