Mooch
My neighbour has just taken delivery of £70Ks worth of Tesla 85 and he's just let me have a go. What a fantastic machine! Smooth and silent acceleration like you wouldn't believe - under 5 seconds to 60 - it's more like selecting warp drive than booting it and this isn't even the quick model! Simply gorgeous to look at and luxurious inside, it looks like a cross between a Maserati and an Aston Martin, more toys than you can shake a stick at and all controlled via a huge iPAD for a centre console. In fact, you can even do everything but drive the thing remotely via an app. Quite a different driving sensation because you rarely have to brake - batteries are recharged when you take your foot off the throttle so it naturally slows down as if you are braking. And a range of 260 miles if you drive normally on a couple of quid's worth of electricity. I want one!
BenD
i saw the how its made for this car a while back and it looked amazing i saw one a few days after seeing the program and made me want one
Darrell O'Neill
..... But it's electric... Call yourself a petrolhead? ☺️
Lyonspride
The concept is great, but to me it'd be kinda like playing a driving game/simulator on a PC/console and having the sound turned off, you don't realise just how much you rely on the sound feedback until it's missing. I remember years ago, playing the original Gran Turismo on PS1, drifting a Dodge viper around some fictional race track, it got late in the evening and I had to turn the sound off because of people in bed, suddenly I couldn't keep the damn thing away from the armco barriers!!! Mooch
..... But it's electric... Call yourself a petrolhead? ☺️ Point taken, and it isn't the same experience without the noise, but as a piece of technology, and fast technology at that, it is impressive. I won't be taking one round a track anytime soon, though...the Westy is safe!
corsechris
Got to say, after seeing the 'How It's made' and then the release of the P85D version....if my lucky numbers ever come up, it's another one for the garage.
dombanks
best thing is tesla have released loads of their ip into the public domain. some one has one in the car park here. dont think its the newest one but its certainly 3 series sized and silent
JOCKER
Yep driven one too - an amazing piece of kit and seriously rapid. I don't buy the whole noise debate - this is an exec limo which cruises the motorway, not a sports car, although it has the performance to match one. jeff oakley
Sound is important for some that is for sure. All Hybrid and full electric cars from 2016 onwards have to be fitted with a sound generator as since they started being driven accidents have increased as blind and also stupid people just step out as there is none of the usual noise associated with transport. The Tesla is an incredible piece of kit and to be honest as a dyed in the wool petrolhead, I would have one. The range is the only draw back for me as the quoted figures are only if you do not operate the heater, lights, air con etc. If you give it the beans then it is half as much I am reliably informed by an owner. This will change as Tesla are working on new batteries that will double the range with super fast charging, so go for a coffee and you will have a good charge again. These days as a commuter wafting in near silence, with a quality surrounding, great stereo and a button marked "insane" to enable you to unleash full power instantly, what is there not to like?
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman
So true Jeff. I hadn't really registered the sound generator requirement, you've got me curious now! Is there a specific sound they have to make, or will they come with a menu... hmm, think I'll waft into work with "Jaguar straight six" today, or wahoo, home time, "F1 V10" IT is! Lyonspride
I can see a point in future where said electric car sound generators will be trim level specific, the higher the trim level the better it'll sound, which will then lead to a market in upgraded sound generators and then a clamp down by the authorities on those that are too loud or the wrong type of sounds..... Until eventually it becomes illegal to change them.

The official EU approved generated sound is of a clapped out 1977 Citroen 2CV. Jen Aftermarket modifications will be illegal obviously.
Dommo
My Zoe has 3 sounds, which are all futuristic humms. Sounds a bit like a hoverboard from back to the future. Or, if you turn the 'voice' off, just sounds like the london underground.
