Thanks muchly for the comments chaps - some more helpful than others .  He has gone quiet since I posted but I'm gonna have one go at digging him out when he starts again, and if that fails then it's a call to Mickey the Moler in Pershore.

 

Edited to add a public service announcement in case helpful to someone - using http://www.mole-catcher.co.uk/ I found a local mole catcher who will get the blighter for the princely sum of £35.  No mole no fee.  Cheaper than 2 of the vibrate-y things that may or may not work.
