Terzo204 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Sorry to ask a question that's already been asked, but I did a search and there was no real clear answer - How can I best fit my timing strut? I have one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221611573562?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT#ht_82wt_1399 I need to use the car on the road and I don't want to take any fixings through the grill. Any advice and/or pic's would be appreciated. Thanks gents. Quote
Terry Everall Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 You need o make sure that the strut is at the correct height according to the MSA blue book What you bought comes with brackets so they should help Several of us use rivnuts in the top and bottom of the nose cone and screw the bracket in place Road cars usually leave the strut in place Quote
Terzo204 Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 I'll fit it in line with the Blue book (S10.9) Rivnuts - That's a good idea. Do I need special rivnuts for fibreglass? I would be interested to know which ones are best to get. Would I not need to remove the strut for driving on the road? I thought the police might take issue with it. Mike Quote
AdamR Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Rubber well nuts work well in fibreglass / carbon - have my numberplate and side doors on using these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xrubber+well+nut&_nkw=rubber+well+nut&_sacat=0 1 Quote
Terzo204 Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 Thanks Adam. Good idea. Assuming I will have to fabricate a bracket to attach the timing strut to the nosecone, would aluminium sheet be the best option? If anyone has any pics I would be grateful Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I did make one on my road car that fixed to the chassis bolt under the nose Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I never had the police bother about mine and I ran the car a lot on the road for a season and a half in "sprint trim". You do tend to make sure you're not taking liberties and "pushing the law" in other areas though! Aluminium bodied rivnuts are better for grp than steel, alternatively, as Ad am mentioned, rubber fairing fasteners are good. One thing though, unless you want the startline marshals cursing you, try to make sure the strut doesn't vibrate too much - plays havoc when you're lining the car up on the beam! Quote
Terry Everall Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Mount it top and bottom using thin ( easily bent) ally bracket Send me your email and I will try to take a pic for you Quote

stephenh Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I just bolted mine, using the fixing bracket provided, to the mesh grill, using plastic number plate nuts and bolts available from any decent motor factors. Never had a complaint from the police or the mot people. Quote
Terzo204 Posted February 20, 2015 Author Posted February 20, 2015 Terry - Nope, not yet. Have a few mates round on Sunday to fit a new nose cone and fit the timing strut. Quote
Terzo204 Posted February 22, 2015 Author Posted February 22, 2015 Now all sorted. Took significantly longer than I thought to fit new nosecone and timing strut, but all sorted now. Passed my ARDS on Friday and posted my application for the 21st on Saturday. Nearly there! Quote
