S2000 Engine

Hi,

 

Having just ordered my S2000 kit i'm on the hunt for the engine.  I figured this might be a good place to start (before a google search and ringing the local car breakers) and wondered if anyone could recommend a place to buy from.  My ideal would be a re-manufactured or re-conditioned one.

Good look with that one! I ended up buying a whole car & breaking it. The wife's not to impressed with the remains our the s2000 on the drive but on the plus side you know what your buying to some extent & it only owes me £500.

Yeah I thought it might be a tall order  :) but if you don't shoot you don't kill.  I guess I wasn't sure if there was a "specialist supplier/breaker" for car engines for kitcars.  I know of one that does bike engines, but been there and done that!

 

I would consider buying the full car but this would be a last resort - I guess this is the best way to ensure you get all the ancillary bits, loom etc too though.

There is a few specialist jap dealers out there and plenty of breakers. But it's knowing who's genuine displaying correct mileage etc, plus they all want £2500 go £3000 but good luck with the search.

Worth asking on the S2KI forum too, I had a gearbox from there after my first got damaged - got it at a good but fair price, with known history/milage.

 

Its such a well known package now that it seems to be pretty steady value wise, "bargains" are probably out there, but are rare, very rare! In fact, probably the only way to get one for much less than the going rate is, as Sycho said, to buy and break a whole car.

 

Oddly, it's one engine, after many of the comments on S2000 owners forums, I'd be very wary about buying in reconditioned form. There appear to be one or two areas that can trip the unwary re-manufacturer, particular in relation to the bore-liners. I'd much rather pay a little more and have an untouched lower milage engine straight from the car, or pay an awful lot for a proper re-build from one of the respected S2000 specialists, than pay somewhere in the middle for a recon from a general engine re conditioners.

 

Frankly though for a youngish engine with reasonable miles, I'd be expecting it to be a good number of years away from requiring a rebuild. (Unless it was going to be put to pretty extreme use, anyway).

 

There seem to be enough engines out there that we're a while away from re-builds as a matter of course yet. (Unlike the XE I ran in a previous car which had fourteen years and over a hundred thousand on it when I got it, the F20C had 50000 and was from 2004)

There are some good deals about just keep your eyes open. only buy what u can see running with history and get chassis numbers makes it alot easier getting engine parts.there are some good deals on full cars and you can make some good money back selling parts ie my 2003 car with 25k miles come in at less than 3k but it did take some time looking hard to find that just take your time and don't rush buy and if you need any advise just drop me a pm have brought 3/4

My s2000 will be being broken soon at copart in Colchester if I accept the insurance payout.

Bonus as it's got a nice supercharger bolted to it too.

14psi at 9200 sounded awesome.

I didn't think copart broke cars, you have to buy the whole car as salvage in an auction. That's where I brough mine from but the Peterlee depot, you also have to be a member.
