DVLA Problem non Westy...

Recommended Posts

Posted

We recently moved and I posted the V5s to the DVLA to change address. They haven't returned yet.

Luckily the chap who we sold the house to texted that we had mail. Its a tax refund and we have confirmation that we sold the car!!

So the car is now untaxed and we can't tax it as we don't have a V5!

Any ideas what to do please?

A couple of times ive needed their help and theyve been great- the last time was v5 related and they were able to tell me where my app was in the system

You can tax at the post office using form V62 if you don't have the v5 or renewal. But there is a charge for doing so.

As mentioned above though I would speak to the DVLA first if the issue is because of their error.

Call them for sure, if their automated system sends you a fine, you'll never get rid of them and probably end up paying even if it wasn't your fault. That or go to court, where it'll 99% go in your favour (if your bored and off work).

On the phone they're very erm.... Some would say professional, but i'd say rude/miserable is closer to the mark, probably due to very poor middle management. They do get the job done, but it's all "tick box" bureaucracy, so be careful not to tick any wrong boxes.

Thanks for the advice... I shall make that dreaded call...!

Sounds like exactly the same mistake they were going to make with my partner's car. Luckily because it was taking so long we phoned them up to chase and upon finding out the process it was going through stopped them from adding a new owner.

It bit late I know - but always send stuff to the DVLA via registered post - doesn't cost that much extra and you have proof of posting even if some twerp the other ends signs for it and throws it in the bin :(

You can also email them (link below) - trouble I've found with phone calls is that they often never seem to have any record of it !!

Makes no difference if you send docs. by registered post.  Once your mail is received by the DVLA it goes into the vast internal mail system and more likely to go missing there.   It's not as important as a Passport should that go missing, it's just a missing V5 which is easily replaced.

ps. Keeping a copy of your V5 is more important when posting anywhere.

They tried to fine me for not notifying them I'd sold my last tintop - I'd sent the notifcation slip off but they claimed they had no record - hence why I send everything registered now as they won't try it on if you have proof you posted it !!
