Stu Faulkner Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 The gypos have been seen in the area. i have a garage up and over door that is remote that i unplug and it also has two lateral bars that go through the frame. I fancy a bit more. I have been looking at ground anchors or some kind of bolt that goes into the floor, a bit more visual. Any ideas? Quote
blue ass fly Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Ground anchors are good with crop proof locks Anything visual to deter the #%}%%#s They turn up with cordless grinders nowadays so get as good as you can Is the garage near the house - mine was a couple of miles away but near some houses so i fitted a battery operated alarm too Dont stop em getting in but alerts people when they do Quote
Stu Faulkner Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 Mines attached to the house I'm looking at these.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GARAGE-DEFENDER-DOOR-LOCK-MOTORBIKE-MOTORCYCLE-SECURITY-/230398825914?pt=UK_HaG_Lock_Safes_GL&hash=item35a4d715ba Quote
Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup) Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I have a drop down post that goes in front of my garage door. It is really good and drops down into the ground out of site. It stops my door from opening. Quote
Stu Faulkner Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 Nice, So even if they peel the door open there is still a post to get over. Quote
dombanks Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 i used these in the past on a standard up and over door. you can get 4 if you wanted all on the same key. I mounted a metal plate to the inside of the door for a bit of extra strength. i did look at that garage defender thing but its only as good at the ground you anchor it in (the block paves i had were rubish) and also im a firm believer of keeping the door relatively clean. a load of visible stuff just screams "valuable stuff inside" to me. they extend about 2 or so inches into the frame. i left my car in a garage for quite a while on its own so i also put a post into the ground on the inside so the door could be rammed in either. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Enfield-Garage-Door-Bolt-Lock-One-PAIR-MK2-/221174375033?pt=UK_HaG_Lock_Safes_GL&hash=item337f052279 looks like you can get into the garage from the inside so you could even mount them such that none of the fixings are visible and no key hole and then simply lock from the inside Quote
Stu Faulkner Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 I already have two bolts in the frame and rather like the idea of 'you ain't getting in' philosophy I was also thinking of welding a bigger plate to the defender type so that it has several bolts on the inside as well. Quote

Ive got the defender and its great and it needs bolting to concrete so you would have to extend the plate inside your garage to get a good fixing Quote
Yanto Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 i've got 4 biggish dogs in one side of the garage, brave man who thinks about even opening a door (unlocked) to have a peek in! They start barking as soon as they hear anybody near, anybody but me and the Mrs that is, i don't know how they know but they do! Quote
Dibby Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 If they want it they will have it and the more obvious the deterrent, the more it makes them think there is something worth stealing inside. I've seen them take a Stihl saw to a wall and cut themselves a new door to drag cars out, circular saws through roofs to get bikes out. For £30, a wireless camera off ebay, set to upload to the net on motion detection so even if they destroy the camera it's too late, the footage is in the cloud. I had hours of video clips of me tinkering with something or other in the garage! Not that it would help with gypsies, even with video evidence the police won't go into a gypsy camp to retrieve stolen goods. That's what insurance is for, as long as you've done everything reasonably practicable to protect your stuff, you can buy more stuff, stuff is just stuff, as long as there is nothing sentimental or irreplaceable in the garage. BudSlater Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I got myself a proper roll over door from these guys http://www.henderson-garage-door-centre.co.uk/products/ Genuinely happy with security now! Quote
Lyonspride Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 The best way to secure your property and/or garage, is to not have anything fancy/expensive on show. Competing with the neighbours, having a pile of fancy new cars on the drive, having the biggest conservatory in the street, it achieves nothing, nobody actually cares what you have or how many credit cards it took to buy it, but to a thief it's a big "come and rob me" sign. When looking to move house, find one a few doors down from ^^ this type and you'll never need to lock your door again Quote
SootySport Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 May be worthwhile having a burglar alarm installed that covers the house and the garage. Quote
John Williams (Panda) - Joint Manchester AO Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 just fitted cctv for the whole house... equipment was £90 off ebay for a 8channel; 4 camera system cheers john Quote
Kingster Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I park my tintop on the drive in front of the garage - so they have to steal that first! I also have made my own ground anchor inside the garage door so that it acts as a hoop for a motorbike U lock to fit into - then there's two holes in the door where the shackle end of the lock fits. I use this if the tintop is away with me overnight. Here's a design I originally did - ended up making something similar from some bits lying around (already had the Abus U lock). Quote
