jamie-p Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Hi folks, just a quick intro. My background is mechanical engineering, we have a fully kitted workshop and a couple of family Westfields. I've got a few nut-and-bolt, chassis-up, classic car builds under my belt, but its time I built my first Seven. I'm sure I'll soon become a paid member of the forum, but to start off with - I wondered if you might answer a few questions for me? 1) Does Westfield still use Cortina uprights? (or at least aluminium uprights with the same geometry as the original steel Cortina units). I ask as I understand that at least some of them use an updated geometry. So, which models use Cortina geometry and which use an alternative? Sport? Sport Turbo? Classic Special edition? FW Special edition? As a bit of background, my workshop is full for the next 6 months. I'll be ordering my kit soon (a MDV kit of some sort on a Q plate), but will spend the approaching months sourcing and refurbishing the donor components - so need to make my mind up about which to keep. I already have a number of parts on the shelves including a lot of classic ford parts, plus some bits of a Eunos (MX-5). So even at this stage I have a choice between Cortina IV, MX5 or Sierra uprights already. Of these I think that the Cortina ones are the best due to weight and better geometry, but am open to suggestion. Thanks everyone. Quote
Terryathome Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Welcome to the club. You mention Manchester, meeting this Weds at the Horton Arms, about 8pm if you fancy it? I'm sure someone will be along to answer your questions. Terry Quote
Andy Banks Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Can't answer your question personally but anyway. Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Welcome Jamie, All the modular build kits use cortina front geometry either with cortina 3/4/5 uprights or using Westfield's aluminium equivalent. they're interchangeable but you will need different front wing stays depending upon which you use. only the sierra and Mazda SDV's use different uprights relevant to the donor. Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Morning and welcome. Smokey's covered the which kits use which upright question, just to refine it a little further; all the versions you list are "Cortina" based and all have essentially the same front geometry. Where you may have heard or read about a model with updated geometry, is probably the Mega S2000 kit. It still uses the factories cast alloy uprights, but has been tweaked at the chassis end, with some anti dive geometry and a repositioned steering rack to reduce bump steer. Quote
s2rrr Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Where about in Manchester are you based. Bob Quote

Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Hyah Jamie, whereabouts in Sunny Manchester are you? I'm in Hollinwood, theres a great deal of accumulated knowledge locally, available for you to tap into. As Terry says come along to our meeting next Wednesday at the Horton Arms in Chadderton, but don't expect to see many Westfields there, wrong time of year for that Quote
jamie-p Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Thanks very much folks. I’m based in Worsley. But the family Westfields are up in the Borders. Thanks for the heads-up re: the meet-up, can't make this one but I’ll definitely pop along one day, I currently drive a new Fiesta ST – which is fun but not the same as a Seven. Though a bit drier at the moment. So, my uprights are sorted! I’ll stick with the Cortina ones I have on the shelf. I’ve got a couple more questions – so I’ll pop them into the appropriate section of the forum. Quote
