cliver44 Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 I recently bought a pinto powered westy. The battery is dead and wont charge. The battery fitted does not seem correct and when I look it up its designed for a lawnmower! What battery models do yo upinto powered people use? All help appreciated. Quote
Murraymint Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 You can get smaller 12v batteries nowadays, but I've just got a standard size 12v car battery for my Pinto and it works fine…all depends on what room you have... Quote
6carjon Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 A standard swop from original ford supply would be a varley red top 20. Started my rover v8 time after time. Not cheap but lasts years and just works. Cheers jon Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 You'd be surprised how small a battery many Westfields really need Clive. Once you've lost all the extras of the average tin top, even an older one, there's not so much left. If you have no heater or windscreen/wipers you could practically run one on a handful of AAA's! OK, slight exageration maybe, but you don't need the big high AH batteries of the tin top, just one with sufficient cranking current for your engine Quote
Welly Jen Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Pretty much any normal lead acid car battery will do if it will fit in the space you have and has the correct terminals and with plus and minus on the correct sides for the wires. This is the cheapest option and are pretty robust. As GadgetMan says, a Westfield doesn't need much in the way of power compared with a tin top. Heated seats, stereo, electric windows, DVD player, heated rear window are all things most Westfields don't have. Some people run with very small and light batteries. If your car starts reliably on the fist turn of the key every time then you can explore that route. They save many Kg of weight. If you ever need to take several goes at cranking the engine to get it to start then you risk running out of juice. I still use a full size bog standard car battery. Jen Quote
cliver44 Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Thanks for the responses. I don't have any AAA's. Will a PP3 9V do? I will go to local store and find one of similar dimension to that fitted. Quote
mikef Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I have an Odyssey battery that is now well over 5 years old and still going strong. As WellyJen says, it needs to start first time. Quote
cliver44 Posted November 27, 2014 Author Posted November 27, 2014 I will go over halfords and fine something small. I do like those silicone coolant hoses. I think they need to go on my shopping list. Quote
SootySport Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 This is a forum favourite at the moment http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PVR-22-Clubsport-Race-Battery-Bracket-Caterham-Westfield-Locost-Tiger-FREE-P-P-/151127206701 You'll have to change the terminals on the cables though. Quote
BudSlater Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 +1 for the PVR - worked well on my pinto Quote
Terry Everall Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 TANYA batteries are a good internet supplier Quote
Lawrie Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 My pinto was a real s0d to start, especially as it didn't get used regularly, so I kept the standard battery (Hillman Imp/Escort etc) With the Vauxhall XE, this wasn't a problem, so I bought an Oddessy which fits in the battery tray, but laying on its side, and it works fine. It needs the screw on terminals or new leads Quote
