Dibby Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Can you pop into a John Lewis and have a poke about with them yourself? See what you get on with and don't rely on what the internets tell you, we all have different budgets and use them for different things. Do you need an HDMI output? Do you want a memory card slot - very important to some users but irrelevant to others, do you need on-the-go USB? do you care about integration with your office environment? Are you worried about screen resolution? Screen size? Battery life? Do you care about a 'proper' keyboard? Just saying you want to do 'All the usual tablet stuff' doesn't really help, all you'll get is people justifying why they bought their particular brand of tablet. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Google Nexus devices because of their stripped down operating systems with no manufacturer's bumph laid on top. I don't trust the likes of Tesco Hudl and Amazon Fire devices - they're cheap because they're supported by adverts and I don't trust them not to phone home, your browsing helps Tescos advertising machine by reporting what you're browsing and buying online. I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" and the Samsung Touchwiz overlay on top of Android is an unnecessary PITA, it took a fair bit of fiddling, rooting and custom firmware to get rid of it. Would have much rather had a Nexus 9 instead but the old Nexus 10 was getting a bit long in the tooth and the 9 was a long way off at the time. Quote

Christ, what a load of nonsense. You can remove most of the Tesco branding on a Hudl. They are not supported by adverts - they have shortcuts to Tesco online shopping, which again, you can remove. and adverts for Tesco don't pop up anywhere. They certainly don't report your browing habits back to Tesco - certainly not without your permission either - that would be illegal. Tesco Hudle and Amzon Kindle are cheaper for a couple of reasons - 1) The Hudle 2 is brand new - lastest gen tech is getting cheaper. 2) Tesco also hopes to steer you into brand loyalty. 3) Amazon want to steer you into using the Amazon online stores, and the Amazon app store. Both Tesco and Amazon will sell their tabs at cost for these reasons. That's why they are really so cheap. You don't have to shop at Tesco or Amazon. You can still take advantage of the good price of the hardware. I will agree that the Amazon devices are grossly over branded and actively try and stop you from using non Amazon services, but the Tesco offerings are not heavy handed at all. Quote
