ADVICE NEEDED ON TYRES HITTING REAR BODYWORK

Geoffrey Carter (Buttercup)

Recommended Posts

Hello All.

I have had some new wheels made for Buttercup and unfortunately the rear arches are rubbing the tyres.

I had new Protech shocks and springs installed a couple of months ago and the shocks are turned to their stiffest setting on the rear. [little setting knob turned all the way to the right].

We have had the shocks lengthend as far as it was felt we could go and the tyres still rub.

If the wheels were 5mm narrower it would not have been a problem and the tyre rubbing with tightening the shocks has nearly gone but it is still happening.

An idea has been proposed to install some bump stops onto the shocks to take out some of the "bounce"

Not sure if anyone has any thoughts but I don't want to change the wheels or tyres as they are all brand new.

Was it happening before you fitted the new wheels and tyres?

Is the tyre sitting too close to the edge of the bodywork?

My guess without photos is that you have the wrong offset on your wheels.........

Where are the arches rubbing mate - any way you can fettle with the bodywork to give you the required space?

Hello and thanks for the replies.

The previous wheels did not hit the bodywork at all and they sat within the arches.

When I had the wheels made I drove a 300 mile round trip and took the car to be specifically measured for the wheels to make sure everything was right....

Unfortunately its not.

The tyre is in front of the arch now and at present there is around 50mm clearance above....that's a guess but will measure and post some pictures tomorrow.

What's the size of the new wheels and what size tyre is fitted? (What were the old ones?)

Also you talk about lengthening the shocks, not sure I understand just what you mean,  do you mean winding the spring platforms up to raise the ride height, or putting physically longer dampers on?

I'd take care on the road with the dampers fully stiffened, let alone geo changes, the back end could be rather skittish.

It's not uncommon on very wide wheel tyre combinations to trim the inside edge of the arch a little. Really wide combinations may need wider arches, but that shouldn't be the case if the wheels/tyres have been matched to the car already.

Do you have detachable rear arches, maybe you could get a pair of extra wide rear aches, rather than adjusting the suspension whereas the car may not handle as well, or if its not catching by much, take a dremel to the inner lip? A photo would help :)

Thanks again for the replies.

DAVE.

Yes the spring platforms were raised upwards.

I was expecting the wheels to fit inside the rear arches as my old ones fitted fine.

The only reason I changed was ....well because I wanted to.....bit of a whim really.

I will post up some pictures tomorrow and also speak with the supplier of the wheels.

The shocks were only tightened up yesterday as I only picked the car up yesterday and it was done to get me home.

If they are sticking out beyond the arches then I would change the rear wheels to correct offset - they won't look right anyway - sell the old ones on (unless you can come to an agreement with the supplier - good luck with that one)

If they are flush with the edge of your arches you may get away with some slight fibreglass removal from the return of the arch

It's nice to have same offset on all four corners

Hope you get sorted

Morning men.

I have spoken with the manufacturer of the wheels and I am going to take them to Birmingham today and they are going to sort them for me which is great news.

THANKYOU Again for all your help and kind words. It really is appreciated

I had to remove a thin sliver of fibreglass from all the way around my rear arches, as they were rubbing (but only on track days).

Hope you get it sorted

I was straight on the phone to the suppliers this morning and I am taking the wheels today to Birmingham and they will be ready for me to collect at the weekend so I am really pleased.
