My visit to N.Motorsport

The day had arrived when I was due to take the yellow peril to Northampton Motorsport for some engine tweeks, despite the helpful advice I had received on here regarding which 'more power' route to take I was still totally undecided !!

Even driving the 144 miles to my destination I was still pondering it

I had driven all the way with not a drop of rain as per forecast, just as well as I hadn't fitted the roof, on my arrival the heavens opened !!

I managed to get it off the trailer & in to the work shop quick enough to avoid a soaking

NOW ..It was time to fry Troys brain with my indecisiveness!!!!

In the reception is a new Duratec fitted with Jenveys, so of course my mind started ticking!, but!

When Troy put pen to paper and did some sums it was out of my budget

So we talked about ( again!! , fair play the bloke has the patience of a saint !!!) getting my Zetec silver top to deliver the goods, to cut an hour & a half story shorter, I decided to go with 285 cams, head porting & light head skim, raceline manifold & I was a sucker for the 45mm jenvey throttle bodies

On the way home I contacted BGH regarding a type 9 box with more friendly ratios, but what with my poor hands free set up & the chap at BGH being ummm possibly hard of hearing I decided that a call tomorrow from the landline would probably be the better option

The car will be there a few weeks, I'm in no major rush, enjoyed my tour of the workshop, looking at some very interesting vehicles & talking to the friendly staff, all good so far

I'm hoping to get up there and spectate on the remap & take a few pics for the car file ( I know I'm sad !) I'll report further for anyone who's interested later on.

My question Marto - I will follow this with interest :-)

Yes me too James  :t-up:

Thats a very similar set up the the silver bullet, unfortunately I can't afford to have Troy wave anything over the SB so I'll be having a little tickle with the ports myself over winter, just hope I don't make it slower

Were going large on the upgrade budget there  aren't we.     I have a BGH E6 box with HD bearings  probably my favourite upgrade,

Dunnell get around 210bhp from an 1800 zetec just from head work and throttle bodies - bottom end stock other than pocketed pistons to accommodate the higher lift cams and arp rod bolts to allow a small redline increase etc

So I would think that 230 would easily be achievable from the 2000 zetec.  More than that will be rods etc to lift revs.

Tell me more about your box Sootysport!?

Type 9 box obviously ? E6?

Did you have an Mt75 box before ?

The E6 is the model number of BGH's "Road and Track" gearbox, see here for details

BGH do a lot more than just recondition Type 9 gearboxes, in addition to a host of modifications to improve reliability etc, they have their own custom gear sets manufactured, allowing them to improve greatly on the choice of ratios available to suit lightweight sports cars such as kits.

Forgot to say, while I changed to a Quaife gearbox rather than a BGH, my experience was the same as Bernie's (SootySports), the change to a decent set of gear ratios in a good (specialist) Type 9 'box was the best upgrade I ever did to the car; fantastic as engine upgrades etc were, it was the 'box that got the best out of them and set the whole character for the way the car drove.

Though if I was doing it again, I'd probably go for a BGH box next time, just for the quietness of normal gears! (My straight cut Quaife was LOUD!)

Thank you Dave for that, I understand now

Looks like a heavy duty E6 would be my best bet

I did speak to BGH yesterday, I do need to supply them with a type 9 gearbox as an exchange, looking on eBay they are few & far between, maybe ' find a part' on the interweb could be a way of sourcing a box.

I'm almost tempted to build mine with the std box so I can truly appreciate the upgrade!

I had a type 9 from the start so that was converted to the BGH E6. After a few track days and a year of motoring the 2nd gear  synchro/baulk ring became noisy, probably due to me being a bit hamfisted.   The box went back to BGH and then had the HD bearings and Baulk rings fitted.  All has been good for two years now.

20 years ago type 9's were available for peanuts but not now, as most reconditioning companies disposed of the stock in skips due to their age. There are a few around on Ebay but the price is going up slowly due to a healthy market in kit cars.   Maybe a breakers yard will have one, you'll just have to do some legwork.   Also try Locost forum classified ads.

I've got a type 9 and an MT75 in the garage to choose from - was going to fit the MT75 and get the type 9 fettled by BGH over time, but it's been suggested that I should just go Type 9 from the off.

Sorry for the thread hijack Steve - I guess we'd better move on!

On topic - I'd be interested in the results as I have a Silvertop on bike ITB's, so keen to see how yours turns out :)

[edit] - If you can't get a type 9 anywhere (like ebay or locostbuilders - usually seen for £150 ish), then BGH charge an extra £300 without an exchange - or there's http://www.firstmotion.co.uk/ who charge £150 without an exchange box and seem to offer a similar service to BGH (no idea if anyone knows of them?)

Thank you for the feedback so far chaps & thanks Kingster996 for the link to first motion

Did a bit of web hunting & it seems first motion are well respected

3 week wait though, very busy aparantly, but that's not a bad thing

I rang them earlier & spoke to Paul, very helpful chap, roughly £100 cheaper than BGH with no exchange surcharge

Decisions decisions again !!

Bearing in mind the stock MT75 1st gear ratio is 3.89, so rather short !!

I'm in a quandry, I have two choices..

The fm 298 box

box at 950+ vat

1st 2.98

2nd 1.97

3rd 1.37

4th 1.0

5th 0.82

Fm 283 box, 1350 +vat ...

1st 2.83

2nd 1.81

3rd 1.26

4th 1.0

5th 0.85

Both boxes are heavy duty with lubrication mods & large roller race lay gear

I'm using the car for quick road use & the occasional track day, do I really need the closer ratio & the more expensive option, but I do like that longer 1st gear

Edit.. Neither first motion or BGH would shift on the price due to work load, but 1st motion would throw in a cast bell housing & gear fork
