It would make sense to use LEDs all-round then to make the circuit uniform. I need to re-wire the whole car at some point so that's the time to convert to LED.

Good plan. Nice, bright and quicker lighting so they are safer, they look better, and no bulbs to replace. I have 75mm round Britax led units on the rear (off eBay), and led strips housed in small alloy housings for the fronts, and small round single led units on the side of the cycle wings. Let me know if you want more specific info on my setup.
