I put about 18 base cupboards (local homebase were selling them off for next to nothing) into my double garage, then went to B&Q and got them to cut up 8 x 4 thickish MDF sheets to fit the tops and act as a workbench. I wouldn't really shell out on new shelving unless you're desperate. Its amazing how many places will sell off old / chipped kitchen unit stuff for buttons.
