Grass cuttings..?

What doweth with yours?

We have a reasonable size lawn, approx. 1/3 acre and it's proving a challenge to keep on top of.  I get a guy to come and mow it but there's still the cuttings to sort.

Currently fills a brown wheelie that the council collect and half fills 3 builders tonnebags which I have to skip on weekend. Was thinking of paying for another wheely or two?

Ps compost solution is too much effort and messy and have no use for all the compost.

Creative ideas gratefully received? :d

My plot in total is around 1/4acre and i've always composted mine.

I've got 3 large bins of roughly 2m3 each which I use for all the grass and hedge cuttings and a summer season will normally fill two of them. The third bin I use for turning. Grass compacts down pretty quickly so what is a full bin one week will be half empty the next. The compost is turned at the end of the season and the best is distributed around the flower beds with the majority being dug into the veg patch.

Like you I don't enjoy composting much, but it's a lot less hassle than trying to dispose of my garden waste by other means.

I do some composting but use council collection as well.

4 x wheelie bins collected every Thursday morning a precisely 7.30 -am.

£104.00 per year. I stick the four bins out every week & they are packed SOLID.

Really good value......my compost heap is the size of a small bungalow and decided enough was enough.

Best value I get from council. Definitely recommended...

I compost the cuttings from the lawn where I want it to look tidy, but mainly I leave it to rot on the ground where it falls... Lazy, I know!

Come on....Essex Man loves a stripy lawn.....don't let the side down.

Have a look at mulching mowers, they theoretically return the cuttings back to the lawn, but chopped up nice and small so it sits on the soil not on top of the grass. No experience of them so don't know how that looks in real life.

I let mine grow until July ish and cut in once, then whack it in my barn to feed to the horses :-)

Could just leave the cuttings on the lawn, if it's good enough for top end golf courses, then i'm sure it's good enough for a garden. I swear the collection boxes are mostly just a gimmick and great for getting blocked up.

I have a garden waste bin now (at cost) because I grow veg in my raised beds, but before that it was put the cuttings in the black bin and risk a fine, leave them on the lawn or queue for 4 hours to get into the local tip every weekend.

We get free fortnightly collections of garden waste, just put in in the council supplied heavy duty green bags. There realisable and only cost a pound each. Never sen a limit to how many you can put out.

I've fenced off a smaller garden around the house and compost it

The rest just gets cut and left on the ground

You could dig a big pond ;)

Oooh-arrr. Loves me a bit of compost, hedge trimmings, kitchen waste, grass, it all goes into growing next years veg. If there's too much at the end of the summer the grass gets sprinkled under the hedges to add nutrients to the soil and provide homes for grass snakes, hibernating bees and all the critters.

Got more moss and Dog Lichen than grass in our 'lawn', but still got this same issue. We get a wheelie bin collection once a fortnight, costs £45 a year for the 'service'. Should be once a week in the growing season if you ask me..

Considered composting but haven't really got anywhere I want to put a large smelly pile of decomposing veg matter.  Neighbour went to a muclhing mower and swears by it. Maybe I need to do that too. Inherited our mower so no idea if it mulches already, best check that first!

Council collects our garden waste FOC .

One of the truly great benefits of living in Labour controlled Wigan MBC  :)
