Buying a car with wrong engine on log book

Going to look at TVR tomorrow - it is supposed to be a 3.6, but has been upgraded to a 4 litre sagaris engine

One of the first questions I asked was "does the log book reflect the engine change" - the answer was oops I should have checked that when I purchased the car (he purchased it like it)

So the question is - is it an easy and quick job to sort with DVLA and should I insist that it is done before the sale or is it just a formality that I can handle after I have purchased the car?

I believe the engine upgrade was done by Str8six who are well respected TVR folk I believe, so I would imagine there is not too much to worry about - the sagaris engine had about 25k on it when fitted

It should be pretty straightforward to get it changed yourself

What evidence to give

You might need to give DVLA evidence or written confirmation of the changes to your vehicle.

Engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)

You’ll need to provide either:

* a receipt for the replacement engine

* written evidence from the manufacturer

* an inspection report provided for insurance purposes

* written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)

So basically get a letter from your friendly local garage confirming the change and engine number and capacity then send this off to the DVLA with the V5C

Just a heads up though; dont forget that its technically been modified, and any insurance angency will naturally want to know. Furthermore, all the current quotes will grab the current DVLA information, which will obviously be a smaller engine, thus cheaper. Expect the price to bump up slightly.

Oh still looking -  fingers crossed.

I seem to recall speaking to Jason at STR8six that quite a few engines have no number.  TVR were having so many engines back for warranty repair that they removed numbers when swapping engines around.

So this may also be wrong on the V5.

As with all these things, it seems that what in the past were simple changes are being more closely checked.  At some point I imagine it will also be the case that an engine change could impact emissions and tax bandings etc.

TVR will probably be PLG anyway but something else to check if a post 05 car.

It already impacts tax band hence the requirement of a garage letter.
