Graham0127 Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 The first letter came within two weeks then about a week later the second arrived. Never come up before.......want a rubbing of the vin plate.....have you ever heard anything like it. Surely they should have local offices to sort this type of thing out.....if there is anything to sort out. As for a photo of the number plate in situ on the car.....you could get anything made up (still)....fancy UPU 2 Quote
Tim Reid Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Maybe I won't be bothering with new engine...can't imagine what grief that'll bring. Changing the engine is not tricky. I simply wrote a letter and sent back the V5, it was changed and returned to me in good time. Quote
tisme Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Getting the DVLA to change or correct something is very hit and miss - I've just got them to correct something on the V5 of my wife's car that's been incorrect for years and has now only become a problem since the MOT's are all computerised and linked - they made the corrections within 3 weeks and everything is ok now. However, 18 months ago I sold my 4x4 to my next door neighbour who then went to their local DVLA office (before it was closed for good) and transferred their private number plate - this caused no end of problems with Swansea who insisted I'd not notified them I'd "scrapped" the vehicle even though they'd just sent my neighbour a new road tax and confirmation of transfer. It seams they often can't seem to cope with anything that's out of the ordinary or "komputa says no...." One lesson I did learn was to send EVERY correspondence via Record Delivery - strange how they sorted things out once I'd done that rather than saying "we have no record you obviously haven't sent anything....." (which I think is short for we've lost your paperwork somewhere). They finally sorted it but even then grudgingly, even sending me a letter that basically said "in the circumstances we'll not pursue you through the courts for something you did correctly, we screwed up on but we'll never admit it or apologise...." The local offices used to be able to deal with just about any problem and of course, face to face - now who knows what or who you're dealing with Quote
Graham0127 Posted May 20, 2014 Author Posted May 20, 2014 Had another talk to DVLA......really helpful girl on the other end (Jenna....hmmmmmmm). After lots of digging through old paperwork we think we have discovered what has happened. Car was given number by Westfield as shown on my invoice. Car was built......vin plate showed number as stamped on chassis and my invoice. Car was inspected and registered. DVLA gave another number as shown on V5 (not number given by Westfield) This NEW number was then stamped on blank strip on vin plate, below number stamped by Westfield. When this number was stamped ,one digit was left out. So instead of the normal 17 digit number I have a 16 digit number on my vin plate. Now just need to see what DVLA want to do.....amend V5 or vin plate. ..... Engine is original as inspected....M711.......... Number on V5 completely different. Very short number unlike engine number I have seen before. If it doesn't get sorted I'm gonna buy another Porsche and go racing Moral of this story......check your numbers....just like the lottery ! Graham0127 Posted May 20, 2014 Author Posted May 20, 2014 Just checked engine number again in daylight and although not very well stamped it does match V5 ! Have just had really good conversation with original builder..... Shocked I had managed to trace him....but he confirmed the above.....even remembered the unclear engine stamping and the first 3 letters and numbers....not bad after 12 years. Quote
tisme Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Now just need to see what DVLA want to do.....amend V5 or vin plate. They'll want you to scrap the chassis, provide evidence that you've done this, then you can buy a new chassis from Westfield and the DVLA will give you exactly the same incorrect 16 digit number you had before........... I know, I know, they're not always that bad and probably get a fair few scammers trying it on every day (what was that on the forum the other day about a Triumph Stag registered "Westfield" ??) By the way, my V5 has an engine code of ".... CZ0XE..." - I'll live with that being pretty close to a C20XE but I'm sure one day some computer will cough.............. Quote

alexander72 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Graham - what happened on this mate - my buddy Jon Pettit has had similar thing happen on his MOT papers where the MOT man entered the digits in the wrong order into the computer :-/ doh…. Quote
Graham0127 Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 All sorted. DVLA issued new V5 and MOT. I supplied rubbing of VIN plate and engine number and they did the rest. Very helpful people and no grief, even got a direct phone number ! Quote
