My car just passed it's 13th MOT.....no problems.

However,.DVLA have written me a letter asking for confirmation of registration number and chassis number... I sent them off and got another letter today.

During the MOT of the above vehicle a discrepancy was identified between the VIN number provided by the MOT tester and records held by DVLA.

I have been asked to send photographic evidence and a rubbing of the vin number. They also want to know where the number is on the vehicle. Also engine number.

The number on my MOT was automatically generated from ,I think the reg. number. It is the same as on my V5 but with 4 extra digits. Last years was the same as my V5 with one extra digit.

The letter also asks if the car is a kit car?

Surely after 16 years registered this shouldn't be a problem ???

Probably one for Steve D !

Graham, if you want to PM me the following I can see if I'm able to offer some words of wisdom for you.

Chassis number stamped into VIN Plate

Chassis number stamped into chassis tube

Number given on V5 document

Number given on MOT Certificate

Have you compared numbers yourself?    Could just be a misread by the tester.

I can see exactly where DVLA are coming from......numbers are similar but not the same.I have all previous MOTs and only since automation has problem arisen. But, this is the first time DVLA have queried it.

Thanks for your help Mark....I will send you numbers on Sunday if that's ok?

Mark..whereabouts will I find stamp on chassis tube ? I think chassis is 1995, car registered 1998.

SABTV is a DVLA allocated chassis number.

It wasn't unitl around 1996 that Westfield started using 17 digit vin numbers so I'm guessing your 1995 chassis would originally have had a short number which was possibly unacceptale to the DVLA in 1998 when it was registered and therefore they issued an alternative number.

I'd be interested to know what number is stamped on the chassis tube.

As soon as I can get the number I'll message you Mark.

All this dangler really gives me the ache.....can't be done with it all. Maybe I won't be bothering with new engine...can't imagine what grief that'll bring.

Graham, I've hidden the post with your VIN numbers in it - this is in a publicly viewable area of the Boardroom, anybody could see them, but don't worry, Mark's an admin, so he can still see the post.

If you want the thread moved to a members only area, just shout.

FWIW, where there's lots of contemporary documentation - like MOTs going back years, the DVLA don't actually seem too bad at sorting these hiccups out. It's a bit of a pain I know, but hopefully soon fixed, the. It's done and you can crack on without having to worry about it in the future.

Graham if your chassis no. Is similar to my car it'll be stamped on the top cross member/rail on (drivers side) where peddle box mounts facing forward. Above your feet in the engine bay if that makes sense. Mines only a letter and 4 numbers so I may get a letter too as my MOT caused issues last time.

Let's hope you don't get any grief. Sure it will be sorted.....maybe they've got nothing better to do.

The MOT tester thought I might get all this from the scum over at DVLA, how long after the MOT did you get?
