A friend's son has a 55 plate Cupra 1.9 DTI, which dumped its oil down the exhaust on the motorway the other day.

The turbo bearing expired, so there's not much left of the impeller blades (not a pretty sight), but it was stopped quickly, so we think the big ends survived.

The question is, will any of the metal from the impeller, or bearing have worked its way into the engine.  The intercooler has collected most of the oil and probably most of the metal too.

only a strip will tell ,but most likely its ingested summat , I would bang a secondhand turbo on it drop the oil whats left and fire it up an see how it goes ,if it has issues bang it on ebay as it should bring half decent money

There has been some disastrous turbo self destructions on these PD engines.   A new or 2nd. hand turbo definitely required.   I can guarantee shrapnel has gone into all parts of the engine and intercooler.  You will need to dismantle enough of them to give a thorough steam and clean. It's time consuming doing it yourself and expensive having a garage doing it for you.   If you are not up to it then do as Steve suggests, the quick way out.   It may be that the previous owner had the same idea and you ended up with it, does happen.

Its all up and running, after everything was thoroughly cleaned.  The intercooler caught the bits.

An expensive mend as the turbo housing was damaged, as well as the impellers
