peet Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 The EU rules are reccomendations which for some reason the UK governnent adhere to with no reason or common sense. If you think it's bad with vehicles look at private aviation - I wanted my PPL but the laws are so conflicting from various authorities it puts me off as it doesn't look like fun! And in history the last time when little laws were sneakily changed that allowed big laws to be changed was 1930s Germany... Erm can you tell i'm not an EU fan? Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I think that if the EU want to try to force something through they can, however it depends who is in control of the government at the time as to this being implemented. I can see the Mirror headlines about "rich people" bleating on about losing their number plate to a system that is for the greater good of us all if it was labour! As I understand it the DVLA technically still own all number plates issued, those who purchase a distinctive one only technically buy the right to display it. This is why some car owners have found a barn find car with a nice plate only to find DVLA have reissued it and sold it on. I did some work for the IAAF with the EU on the proposals for MOT changes. At that time they were discussing this with Turkey as they were looking like joining the EU in the near future, you could not make it up. Quote
Lawrie Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I don't think a Frenchman would ever consider buying a car with a steering wheel on the wrong side. They're still upset about the Metro's we sold them 20 years ago. The problem with these things is that they don't help job mobility, they help unemployment mobility. Yes the DVLA could end up in in Vilnius or Riga. And I remember the MOT proposals - anything non standard (pads, alloys, exhaust, bulbs etc) would result in an MOT failure, just in case it was dangerous. The end of the kitcar too, I suspect. I've had enough of these "bright" ideas Quote
