dombanks Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 when your buying car insurance which ones should you be looking for? it seems to vary on who gives what and how it effects the price. ive got a decent quote for my every day car but its asking if i want these, some i dont like miss fueling (goodness me its the green pump its pretty obvious) but there are others like personal injury and motoring legal protection. also protecting NCB, if you have an accident do you just lose all of your NCB or just chunks of it. i have 11 yrs now. blue ass fly Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I used to have everything and as it got more expensive began to question it I now protect my ncd ( i think your allowed 2 claims in 3 yrs or 3 in 2 ),screen cover and courtesy car Everything else i do without Quote
Boombang Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Trouble with protecting ncb is you still have to declare the accident and the price will shoot up anyhow. I do it but really doubt it's worthwhile, would like to be proven otherwise. Legal cover I have had and used a couple of times. Thought I was doubling up on this as have it on my home insurance but that excludes some motoring type events. Key cover is valid these days if sensible money to add, a modern key could be upwards of £200 if you sourced through a dealer. Not sure what else there is? Quote
bigals Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Even with protected ncd the three claims your alowed in three years are regardless of fault . Also included are claims from second insured drivers. I have had 3 claims in three years and can no longer protect my policy's ncd even though only one was classed as at fault due to a untraced driver. I dont lose my ncd until the forth claim which I hope wont happen. To be honest my insurance has stayed about the same regardless. Quote
Boombang Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Do you know if you premium is any less with that protected ncb and the claims rather than not having the ncb? Quote
Lawrie Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I didn't realise Hungerford was so dangerous. I really do think that insurers do try and pile on the extras to justify paying more. For example the protected ncb. If you have an accident, you'll usually only lose 2 years, which for me is about the same as the extra premium. Legal expenses - the ambulance chasers do it for free. Its money for old rope. Quote
dombanks Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 car insurance is pretty expensive here so the protected ncb is probably worth it, but the others i had no idea about esp the legal cover thing. anyway needs must and money saved on this is money to spend on the westy. turns out i didnt have legal cover this past year anyway! SootySport Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 If you are looking for Car insurance on comparison websites beware of the "Assumptions" note. They all give you a quote for very basic insurance based on the Assumptions and things like Protected NCB, parking on the road, legal cover etc. are all extras. Quote

That's because its a no claim discount rather than a no fault discount, assuming you didn't shoulder the cost yourself. Quote
iain m Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Basic premiums on web sites always look bargain price but folk do not really understand what they are really covered for, my inlaws all allowed their children to drive their cars foe years and never believed they only had minimum 3rd party cover and they fortunately never had a claim. The latest of many extras is " car hire ", if your car is repairable you will normally get a loan car for the duration of the repair. If the car is written off from accident or fire or stolen you will not get a loan car, my brother inlaw crashed his 3 year old Octavia, it looked repairable and given a loan car, 3 days later it was taken away as all the air bags had gone off adding over £3k to the repair cost and it was written off. bigals Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Protecting my ncd costs about 50 on top of a 200 policy . With out any ncd I was quoted 400 so the numbers dont add up . The mean streets of Hungerford are only dangerous when teenager's on there phones run in the back of you. Still 3 bumps in 22 years its hardly Birmingham lol Quote
s2rrr Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 A protected NCB is not all that it may seem, whilst some insurance companies say your NCB is protected they may hike up the premium should you have made a claim for any reason even a no blame claim. So actually yes your NCB percentage is protected but your premium full price has soared and so you pay more. Good these insurance companies almost like bankers with a "B". Can't say they are all the same but I had to change companies after they tried that on one. It seems that where you used to get all the items like windscreen cover, protected NCB, hire car etc etc included they are now trying to sell basic insurance to appear to be competitive but in reality are offering less cover for similar cash. It is essential to read the smallish print as you may not be covered for what you assume you are. Now that car insurance prices seem to be falling they may try and be competitive again by adding back on all the covers they have removed. The costs by the way can be fairly cheap at say £25-£30 per item but add on 4-5 and you could be substantially increasing your premium. They must think we are stupid, but guess they do catch shed loads who don't check these things out. Another example of the financial institutions ripping us off. Soap box away now. Bob :d Quote
pistonbroke Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Airbags £1000 each ? I think there is something wrong there , I paid C£800 for a 4 man self inflating liferaft c/w survival pack , flare kit , drogue , etc. etc. and they say marine stuff is expensive Quote
iain m Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 There were about 8 airbags and they all went off in the collision  . Apparently the air bags were more frightening than the collision. Quote
blue ass fly Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 On comparison sites you have the option to add and remove any extras In my exp they usually add legal cover I strip back to basic cover and then add what i want - i do it every year and save every year This year we got fully comp with screen, ncb, courtesy car etc for £155 with kwik fit They give a free mot voucher worth £40 too My advice is use all the comparison sites - not just one I always used uswitch but for some reason they came out loads more this year,i went with go compare.my sister lives up the road and got it cheaper with comp the market Its boring but its worth the time and effort Quote
