SteveD Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 just found a young pigeon outside the workshop ,no tail and still in mostly downy feathers on its noggin ,so stuck it in a box to warm up and dry out ,stuffed some crumbled biscuits in with it I didn't think they would bread until spring it must be the mild weather that's made the parents horny and start at it early ,so then what to do with freddy the pigeon any ideas apart from feeding it up for xmas Quote
Hellski Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Unfortunately wood pigeon breed all year round now & have done for a number of years, although this mild winter hasn't help. Best to have a look in the local directory or on the net to see if you have a local animal sanctuary who would either be able to take it off you or advise what is best. If fattening up for Christmas best to find another one as one doesn't go very far.......... Quote

IanG1 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Vermin, rats in the sky. Should have left it for the local fox mate. Quote
M444TTB Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I thought all your northern folk kept Pigeons anyway?! dont let your Ferrets get it though Quote
Paul Morcom Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Vermin, rats in the sky. Should have left it for the local fox mate. Depends on the type of pigeon - wood pigeon from out in the countryside are certainly not vermin; they are fantastic to eat and should definitely be looked upon as nature's harvest. IMHO they are better eating than pheasant or grouse. Town pigeon are a different matter - they are vermin, dirty and carry disease! They should be fed to town foxes so that the town foxes catch the disease and die. This then becomes a win win situation as the town pigeon population decreases as does the town fox population - then the beep beep do-gooder town councils will stop catching up town foxes and dumping them in the countryside where they have no idea how to survive and spread disease amongst a healthy wild fox population. Rant over. The French collect them from nests before they fledge (aka Squabs) - a delicacy so eat Feddy now, don't wait until next week. Perfect for your "under 500 calorie" diet. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Must be good money in lost pigeons - the Honey Monster has stepped up his support of the club and is now a WSCC Sponsor. Thanks wuv, much appreciated! Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 They do indeed breed all year. There's a pair that get a leg-over on my garden wall all-year except in this very windy weather when the male bird can't land on the hen accurately enough and she gets the hump and flies off! Quote
