greenandmean Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I know this has been asked before but has anyone any recommendations for travel insurance, the travel agent want nearly as much for insurance as for the holiday. It's to cover the Channel Islands where apparently there is no NHS cover, and its two old farts with pre existing conditions. Any thoughts gratefully received. Quote
SootySport Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Shopping around is the only way to buy the best value travel Insurance like any thing else. Try your own Bank 1st. for a quote, my travel insurance is free with my account, sure they will help an existing customer. Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 When my dad was in his 70's and after heart surgery etc he managed to get travel insurance from SAGA It was still very expensive though. Quote
iain m Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 There is no shortcut, and cheap insurance at any age is equivalent to no insurance, always take the full policy wording with you. Travel Agents make a lot of money out of travel insurance, I use Age UK, it was called Help the Aged, you require adequate cover for minimum £1 million medical, plus repatriation, plus full cancellation. At 70 insurance doubles, at 80 it triples. I am in my 70s and in good health and pay double, my wife at late 60s has a dodgy heart valve and pays quadruple my premium. You must tell the underwriter the exact problems and medications and they will cover you and you can take some of the non medical items out to reduce the premium. We often travel with friends that either do not declare medical problems or just don't bother saying things like " if I feel unwell I will get a flight home " airlines do not carry sick passengers or passengers in plaster casts". My neighbours son was convinced he and his family were covered by their credit card although they did not pay for the holiday on the card which was a condition. His suffered an appendicitis $28k for the hospital plus $10k to extend their stay until he was fit to travel and pay for expensive one way revised flights home!! Quote
Stuart Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 IIRC correctly the concensus last time this was asked was InsureandGo, but I've used Staysure the last few times who covered minor pre-existings for two fairly old farts with no bother and cheaply. Quote
greenandmean Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Thanks Stuart that's the one I was trying to remember, used them before, didn't make a claim so not sure how good they are at paying out. Hopefully won't claim this time either Covers all Iain's points medical £15,000,000, repat. etc. cost including medical screening for both of us is £3 more than travel agent wanted for one of us before screening. :suspect: Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Also have a look at AXA for pre-existing conditions. Quote
s2rrr Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I use First Direct and get the insurance for the full year not a great deal more than for the standard 2 week summer do. I think £145 for the year for the family of 4 and the old f*rt with a pre existing but medically controlled condition and safer than the numpty in the next seat who doesn't know or care about his health and is more at risk, makes my p*ss boil but . Soap box away now. Have you tried Saga. Bob Quote
greenandmean Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 Thanks everyone, gone with the Insure & go Quote
dhutch Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Rightly or wrongly last time I bought some a few weeks ago for someone joining my in India we used http://www.coverforyou.com which my brother is also using while doing his gab year. Online review where plausible, was was the price, but never had call to use it as yet. Last time I went mountain biking, in the alps, with uplift, I hunted around and found somewhere that didn't ask if you where using uplift or not, which halved the cost. Not idea how that would have gone but there we go, young and naive! Daniel Quote
