Murraymint Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Anyone know where I could purchase eye bolts with a 3in thread...
Mark (smokey mow) Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Lifting eye bolts for engines etc? or harness eye bolts?
Murraymint Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Sorry it's Harness eye bolts I'm looking for...
Mark (smokey mow) Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 AFAIK 2" is the longest you can buy for harness eye-bolts and that is what Westfield use. Anything longer and you are potentially putting some pretty high torsional and shearing forces onto the welds of the the harness rail which could in the event of an accident lead to failure of the harness mounts.
Murraymint Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Ok thanks for that, will have to think again...
s2rrr Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 You may be able to get a female threaded eye bolt which you can screw a decent quality stud bar into. Bob
SootySport Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I has some eyebolts for harnesses, but as Mark says not 3" long.
Mark (smokey mow) Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 You may be able to get a female threaded eye bolt which you can screw a decent quality stud bar into. Bob As said already, if doing this you really need to think carefully about the effect it will have on mounting tubes welded to the chassis. The further the eye bolt is from these, the proportionally greater the shearing forces are in an accident. The standard 2" eyebolts have a stand-off from the harness tube of 1" so if this is increased to 2" by using 3" long eyebolts then the shear forces will be doubled.I'm aware of more than one Westfield which has sheared off the harness mounts in an accident, and although I know these were welded on by others (not Westfield) as a conversion from 3 to 4 point harnesses I personally would not advise doing anything which would increase the failure potential of a safety critical component. If the height of the eye bolt does need raising for whatever reason, then I would not be doing this without also introducing some additional reinforcement to the mounts and harness tube.
Murraymint Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Thanks Mark sound advise. My plan was to bring the eyebolts forward and put them through the chassis. But will have to re-think this one through as I'm trying to fit my new lockable boot lid.
peet Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Through the chassis rail may weaken it unless tubes or washers are welded in as well. To bring the mount forwards you could make adapters. I have found seat belt mounts similar to the westy ones. If cut to the chassis tube size with a heavy gauge steel plate welded on top and it could be bolted at the rear and the eye fitted on the front. Because it is bolted the weld on front isnt as critical. If you wanted it really strong you could weld the plate and new mount to the chassis too. Or just drill holes in the boot lid like everyone else!
s2rrr Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Absolutely correct Mark regarding mounting a 3" long eye bolt, I was only answering the question about whether you can get them, the suitability and engineering would need to be properly assessed. If the 3" bolt where correctly screwed into a proper mounting and used in the correct orientation it would not be a problem. It is very unusual to need or have to extend the standard seatbelt top mounts. Bob
